I played the Japanese demo like a year ago and my impression was they successfully blended the original games RPG elements and overall style into the musou gameplay

Some reviewers are into that and others aren't. The story also isn't nearly as deep or really does much in terms of social links, but it's still the canonical sequel to the first game.

I liked dynasty warriors as a kid at least but since my teen years I've been turned off of them. That was a good read though

I enjoy the Dynasty Warriors series, but haven't played the Musou offshoots of any other series. I'm excited for this and I like to see an initial score in the 80s.

my experience is I have no interest in the main Dynasty Warriors series, but a lot of the anime and game spinoffs were all games I've enjoyed. Still love Pirate Warriors games the most. I think as long as the subject matter interests you the gameplay is enjoyable and has enough variation between different characters to keep anyone engaged in the action.
