You actually grow to love the characters and even sympathize with people you may have hated at first. I think the reason is that it lacks mystery of any sort, it's just all horrific shit in your face constantly. Like...I saw a freaky pyramid-headed conjuration of the protagonist's mind fuck a pair of mannequin legs joined at the hip to another pair of mannequin legs until the animation left its' body (death?) and that my mind can handle, but Abby's sex scene was fucking traumatizingly cringe and every moment of the plot was the kind of shit you think of when you see that one pale faced cop that just walked out of a crime scene the true horrors of which you can only imagine that then proceeds to vomit and sob uncontrollably. I think the extra layer of "what the fuck is going on?" I never once felt like I was being punished for playing the game. I never felt that way about Spec Ops The Line either.
