If cities hate the homeless so much, why aren't there state sponsored deaths squads roaming the streets?

Just removing benches isn't hostile architecture. Now if they get replaced by benches that are hard to sleep on or replaced by concrete bumps, that's hostile architecture.

I live in a city where homeless are actively encouraged to sleep in train stations in the winter so they don't freeze to death.

Pretty much.

The big city for the homeless must be pretty weird but less boring.

Here in NC they just set up camps in wooded areas around the towns and cities.

Wonder the streets during the day and sleep in the woods at night.

yea i don't understand why they think removing a bench will stop the homeless...they're looking for a shelter. its not like the bench is a much more comfortable bed than the floor would be.

The original plan was to have a sensor that detected homeless people and then spikes would come out of the benches, but this was deemed too expensive.

cops patrol everywhere.

have to go to the mountain to sleep since they don't go around there.

If they left the benches alone, and gave each homeless person there $500 to go elsewhere, they would still be ahead of the game money wise.

Technically the benches would be a bit more comfortable. Off the ground so less bugs/vermin and if not made of metal, less cold leeching.

and as people with the privilege to choose, we can see those distinctions...If you were homeless, cold and just looking for a covered area that is slightly warmer to sleep in, you're not going to turn around and walk out when you notice the bench is gone.

Martin et al v. Boise only states that homeless can't be punished for sleeping rough when no shelter is available. It does not obligate jurisdictions to make it easy. Conversely, by establishing an adequate quantity of shelter, a jurisdiction is free to resume punshisment

That's actually the stupidest fucking thing. You're inconveniencing the homeless and people sitting while waiting for their train for what

The homeless were gathering in subway stations during the rise of COVID in NYC. People avoided the subway because they didn't want to travel in packs. As people started returning to work, they were met with a larger percentage of homeless people in subway stations. There were also higher incidents of muggings and other crimes.

There should be more of an effort to help the homeless not be homeless, but there are homeless people who adapt to that lifestyle and rather live on the streets. But the subway station isn't a shelter, and you'll be surprised how often homeless people avoid actual shelters for public areas.

they're always there, they've always been there - just that because the subways are closing every night they're just coming to the surface. nothing has changed, this amount of homeless are just now being brought to light.
