I watched Starship Troopers last week and it was near the beginning where the soldiers let the kids all play with and tug of war on the gun, then hand them bullets.

Made me laugh as I forgot about that.

So, um, what exactly is wrong with this?

Do firearms magically tempt people to go out and commit murders? It's a rifle -- probably statistically the least likely firearm to be used in a crime. And it's targeting (no pun intended) an audience that probably grew up around guns and was de-stigmatized to them.

I'm not a big fan of hunting. A deer's eyesight is so poor that a human being is literally invisible when they wear camo. It's anything but sporting. But I can't blame someone for eating deer meat any more than I could blame myself for eating a hamburger. I'm no vegan. The animal on my plate died somehow. I can't go making monsters out of them. (Trophy hunters though can go eat a bowl of fuck.)

You may not like it that other people enjoy firearms recreationally, but it doesn't mean that everyone who owns one is a murderer or potential murderer. That's like saying anyone who is into bodybuilding is a potential rapist, or general perpetrator of physical violence, because you don't need muscle unless you wish to hurt somebody.

When it gets to the point that we start fearing guns themselves, and not just worrying about them falling into the wrong hands, that's when I think maybe we as a society have gotten a little too sensitive. There seems to be a big problem with "stop liking what I don't like" becoming the norm.

"Outgrown your old Daisy?
You're bigger now. You could be ready for your second Daisy B-B gun."

The ad is clearly aimed at a teen / older child and for a B-B gun. Granted, the mention of it being a second Daisy still implies having the first B-B gun at a young age.

I don't agree with giving a child a gun unsupervised. But if I were a father, I'd be willing to let my 8 to 12 year old practice with a Daisy air rifle in a safe location, and under direct supervision, if that's what he or she wanted. (I wouldn't prompt or encourage that behavior, but I wouldn't discourage it either.)

A bicycle can be dangerous and we let children ride those.

Man, back in kindergarten we had these metal bikes with square frames, all metal, no pedals left on some so basically spikes, and square edged wheels (think shopping cart wheel but about 1 foot diameter).
No helmets or gear on a concrete patch.

We even had demo derbies with them as some ran between.

Survival of the fittest.

If we had members of biker gangs running people down on motorcycles every year, we'd say that bicycles were inappropriate for children.

there was more training back then and guns wernt treated like they are now. my grandpa used to tell me stories of him and his friends taking their .22's into the woods camping when they were 11 by them selves. most people in rural areas had rifles and shotguns on their gun racks in their trucks and yes gun safety was actually taught at school including having skeet/marksman clubs. along with parents showing there kids firearms at an early age and eliminating doubt and curiosity cutting down on accidents. and yet despite all that issues were relatively minor since guns were wernt treated as either toys or elements that must be hidden allowing that curiosity to get the better of them.

i my self had a bb gun at 7 and a real one at 9.

Also in the scouts as well. Gun safety needs to return, we wouldn't have so many people shooting themselves and others accidentally if gun safety was taught more.

My dad had tons of rifles and guns I fooled around with.

10,12, 20 gauges.

30-30 and 45-70.

357 Magnum.

I just had enough sense to see if they were loaded with a cartridge before playing around with them.
