It's a momentum changer, if a goon takes a run at your skilled player, it's your team's way of protecting that player saying you are gonna get a walloping if you do it again, same with protecting your goaltender. It amps up the crowd and creates rivalries. A lot of the time if it's a slow, boring 0-0 game into the 2nd or 3rd and two big boys drop the gloves, it energizes the building and suddenly everyone is skating faster again, amping up the hitting and entertainment value of the game.
