The idea was to be undectable by radar and do massive destruction. At the time they were the longest range strike in history but they were near impossible to aim and easily effected by bad weather. Only 300 were confirmed to reach America, with sightings in Mexico and Canada.

All of these landed in the middle of no where. However a pregnant lady and 5 children found one of them in Oregon. One of the kids kicked it and they all died. Only 4 of which died instantly.

These were the only US causalities of WW2 on US Soil.

Japan considered the entire enterprise a gigantic failure due to the time, money and resources they put into the project. One of the aims was to damage morale in America due to psychologically knowing they were danger in their own homes, which never happened.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombardment_of_Ellwood

this happened here in my city:

The Bombardment of Ellwood during World War II was a naval attack by a Japanese submarine against United States coastal targets near Santa Barbara, California. Though damage was minimal, the event was key in triggering the West Coast invasion scare and influenced the decision to intern Japanese-Americans. The event also marked the first shelling of the North American mainland during the conflict.

At first, the US government tried to cover it up because they didn't want anyone in Japan to know how close the balloons were coming. Then someone got killed by one. The local media were allowed to report on it for the safety of their citizens, but everyone was encouraged to keep quiet for reasons of national security.

Today, absolutely no time would be wasted in people making whipping out their camera-phones and documenting in to the world.

I think by by US Soil they mean US mainland . Like California, New York, Louisiana, Houston, San Francisco etc.

But you're right, Pearl Harbor was US Soil

And I'm sure installations that were legally US Soil in the Pacific and Europe were attacked too.

It's a fair point.

they are signatories to the geneva convention, it makes sense they wouldn't risk getting caught violating it by putting chemicals on an unproven delivery platform.

Imperial Japan restraining itself from violating the international laws and customs of war is hard enough to believe (their track record from 1937 hardly shows the Japanese acting as if they were afraid of legal consequences), but it makes little sense that they're quite happy to discard such restraint if the balloon bombs actually reach their targets.

Aside from the gas chamber stuff, it's one of the few things about Hitler people didn't or might not know.

Chemical Warfare terrified him.

Guess because of the shit he seen in WW1 or he knew it could be used against his side in return.
