I'm not entirely familiar with the term "old head" but if it literally just means older people, then yes I absolutely agree. People have a weird defensive hard-on for "the past" and in my view don't fully appreciate just how good and free and expansive the music scene of today is. Putting aside changes in whatever genre happens to be popular in whatever decade, there has never been a time in history where you could access, experience and create music as freely and easily as you can today.

Imagine how many potential Beethovens and Mozarts or Beatles or -insert important artist here- passed through history without making a single peep because they never had access to an expensive music education or instruments or even just a place to practise. Now you can get that expensive music education with some software and youtube. Nearly everyone can do that now.

Also picking out your 3 or 4 favourite bands from entire decades to choose from and then weighing them up against the 3 or 4 artists you hate the most from last year is a really dishonest way to frame any argument, and you see it all the time. "What happened to le music? We used to have Led Zeppelin but now we have Justin Bieber". Get tae fuck man.

To quote a Gogol Bordello lyric:

"There were never any good old days; they are today, they are tomorrow. It's a stupid thing we say, filling tomorrow with sorrow."

Im a young korok but I can see why music from the past was better.

even the heavier stuff like Metallica had some music (eg actual singing) and instrumental work to it.

there are too many fad genres now that rely on gimmicks and there is no actual singing or instrument work. All the reggeaeton and the more commercial hip hop stuff and whatever the likes of the WAP song just dont have the same depth.

Music used to have soul; now a lot of it (certainly not all, I'll 100% admit that) is a soulless cashgrab. WAP? No soul, just money grabbing.

Dad rock and rock ballads are still the best music. Nothing beats the classics. Music nowadays is just bad and low effort. Back when it was mega popular people like MJ, meatloaf, queen, guns n roses, Elvis etc. they actually cared about music and producing something good

These arguments are always stupidly reductive. It's so predictable I could cry.

"The past was better. Between 1750 and 1980 I can name 3 musicians who were important and wrote soulful good music.

As for today, we have Lil Pump, that is literally the only artist I can call to mind. See how bad music is today? I rest my case your honour."

the top 40 nowadays is trash because most of it is engineered by psychiatrists to be as addicting as possible sure. in the past that wasnt a thing. the goal was not to make addicting music, the goal was to make good music. because the bigwigs at the time didnt realize that its more cost effective to solely focus on making the music ADDICTIVE. it being good doesnt make nearly as much money as it drilling holes into peoples brain and crawling inside

good music is addictive, but bad music can also be addictive. its like how great video games are addictive, but then theres the trashy games like clash of clans that are engineered solely to be addictive with no intent on making a good game. all the effort is put into creating a dopamine loop and none put into quality

and dont take this as me saying DURR BACK IN DA OLD DAYS IT WASNT ABOUT THE MONEY!!! it totally fucking was about the money. its just back then they werent as good at this kind of thing. the science just wasnt there yet

Actually in terms of musicianship the bar continues to go up. We have many of the best musicians the last century alive today, because with exposure the competition has become way easier to see and mark yourself against. The skill level is incredibly high, I mean just look at guitar players and lead abilities.

The studio has become a crutch rather than a tool, an instrument to be mastered to complement a great arrangement and composition. On the whole its really hard to gauge entertainment. However when you break it down, somethings become obvious.

For example, you can always do the age old test of having someone perform a song acoustic. If the songwriting is really on point, the melody is strong, theyre tying together good phrasing, combining things into a real composition with good arrangement... Its going to show through with just a voice and a guitar. Doesnt work for all genres of course, but it still illustrates what the studio has become and how produced things are. Only a few short years ago EVERY SONG was produced like it was made to be in Disney cgi movie about two parrots, because it probably was. It became a huge hit because of promotional tie in for the movie. Its all deep tympani, with huge choruses of people in the background NOT harmonizing and just singing the main line of Ohh ohh ohh

Havent tou noticed every Katy Perry song has that part where she just blindly goes uh oh oh oh, uh oh oh oh? Roar, California Girls, all those trash songs have it.

There are some great performers out there, but songs like Adeles Hello wouldnt have been a hit without her clout and powerhouse voice. The main vocal melodies are soooo boring and meandering.

Songwriting has plummeted, production is king. Live music isnt dead but damn hardly anyone really does it really well among the top echelons of stardom.

Speaking as a working musician who gigs every week, its clear which songs people like to have heard in a bar and which are classics. I know, because they make me money lol. Some of these artists would do a lot better if they werent forced into boxes by themselves or others, Ed Sheeran can probably write some really good deep tunes, but are we going to hear them? Probably not over the noise of the monster hits. Not gonna claw my way through a record for that

Despite everything I've said these are some good points. But this speaks to me about what is trending more than what is available.

I think a key difference with today vs yesteryear is that back then, you were kind of just stuck with whatever was popular. You had a radio, you could watch tv, you could go to local shows. That's it. But now you have unfettered access to all music being made the world over. That's an insane difference.

In the 70s, 80s and even 90s music was made differently, it was mostly a band getting together and coming up with something.

now music is mostly manufactured, like someone else said here, its all about the record label having a big ass team of sound engineers and even psychiatrists trying to create something addictive. This is why songs nowadays consist mostly of a bridge that gets repeated over and over and a bunch of shallow, repetitive lyrics

said, certified freak
Seven days a week
Wet-ass p***
Make that pull-out game weak, woo
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, you fucking with some wet-ass p***
Bring a bucket and a mop for this wet-ass p***
Give me everything you got for this wet-ass p****
Beat it up, n word , catch a charge
Extra large and extra hard
Put this p*** right in your face
Swipe your nose like a credit card
Hop on top, I wanna ride
I do a kegel while it's inside
Spit in my mouth, look in my eyes
This p**** is wet, come take a dive
Tie me up like I'm surprised
Let's role play, I'll wear a disguise
I want you to park that big Mack truck
Right in this little garage
Make it cream, make me scream
Out in public, make a scene
I don't cook, I don't clean
But let me tell you how I got this ring

BSB lyrics (show me the meaning of being lonely):

Show me the meaning of being lonely
So many words for the broken heart
It's hard to see in a crimson love
So hard to breathe
Walk with me, and maybe
Nights of light so soon become
Wild and free I could feel the sun
Your every wish will be done
They tell me
Show me the meaning of being lonely
Is this the feeling I need to walk with?
Tell me why I can't be there where you are
There's something missing in my heart
Life goes on as it never ends
Eyes of stone observe the trends
They never say forever gaze upon me
Guilty roads to an endless love (endless love)
There's no control
Are you with me now?
Your every wish will be done
They tell me
Show me the meaning of being lonely
Is this the feeling I need to walk with?
(Tell me why) tell me why I can't be there where you are

Yup! Same thing LOL

There are multiple factors to consider.

First, thinking about decades old music, you're going to think of the best songs, the ones that have stood the tests of times. It's not very fair to compare something like that to "whatever happens to be popular this week."

Second, the emotional history you might have behind some songs simply is not something that can be used in meaningful comparisons. "I had my first kiss to this song" doesn't say anything about the song itself, but it sure makes it special to you.

Third, what's popular changes over time. A genre you grew up with and loved might basically disappear and be "replaced" by something else entirely. It's easy to then blame that new music and not be as open-minded as you should be.

Fourth, every single generation wants to listen to music their parents hate.

Basically, it takes efforts and an open-mind to go for something new that you might dislike when you could just as easily put something you know you love.
