Just 7 reviews so far, but an 83 so far. Just one off of Ys VIII at the moment

Noisy Pixel - 9.5/10
Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is some of the most fun I have had within the action-JRPG genre, period. The adventure includes everything you could ask from the series, with the addition of an addicting gameloop, well-written character-driven narrative, a stellar soundtrack, and great controls. This is not a title to be slept on.

Hey Poor Player - 9.5/10
Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is, lets just come out and say it, pretty weird. But the most important question to me, however, is whether its any fun or not. And, despite all of the changes, I think that it is. Would I want this to be the formula for every Ys game from here on out? Heck no. But a literal antithesis to Ys VIIIs Seiren Islandwhich is absolutely what this game isis really charming in its own way, and the fact that Falcom was able to add so many novel features while still keeping this game Ys-like at its heart is genuinely impressive.

Hardcore Gamer - 4/5
Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is a continuation of what fans have come to expect from the series and the Monstrum gifts add a new and fun gameplay mechanic.

Push Square - 7/10
Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is another solid action RPG, but it lacks the overall cohesion of its island-based predecessor. The city of Balduq is a disappointingly monotonous setting, and the game's storytelling often feels disjointed. But as is usually the case with Falcom's long-running series, it's the fast-paced, satisfying, and addictive gameplay that elevates the experience. Adol's latest adventure certainly isn't a classic, but for the most part, it's still a fun ride.

Monstrums are the titles the characters go by, and Nox is an in-game mechanic or area name. Doesn't sound too dumb in context. This is a 2 on the "dumb Japanese subtitle" scale.

I don't see how it's any more nonsensical as the Lacrimosa of Dana

I would say Ys VIII is a great start. My hope is IX is even half as good.

*series isn't sequential, so you can start anywhere. Adol floats somewhere, bumblefucks around and stabs things*

Yep. That's Falcom music all right. And yet now all I want to do is have them remake Gears of Fortune from Bloodstained somehow.

My early impressions are that the game similar in scope to Ys VIII in terms of size. It being a giant prison city over stranded on a mysterious island is a nice change of pace. Graphics are a bit more unpolished, but the game had a shorter development cycle so I can see why. Trails influence continues to be felt as there's now even more cutscenes than before, but the story seems really good this time around also it's probably the darkest and more mature Ys game to date.

The gameplay as always where it shines though. Combat feels great and the flash dodges and flash guards return from the past few games. They changed the party system a bit so that enemy weaknesses are determined by elemental affinity instead of weapon type. In practice it works the same, but offers greater variety of characters to switch between mid-combat.

The real star here is the movement around the world. Thanks to everyone's new Monstrum powers you can explore the world in ways you never could before in previous Falcom games which also leads to more complex world and dungeon design. Everyone has a unique power, but as long as they're in your party anyone can use them at any time. For example Adol can teleport to ledges and overhangs to get a higher view of the area, White Cat can run up any wall, the next character grows wings and can glide from higher spots, etc. They put a ton of collectibles on the map assassin's creed style for you to get using these abilities.

Assassin's Creed, JRPG style sounds awesome. I trust Falcom knows what it's doing. I don't mind more cutscenes in Ys. I just can't handle Trails's HEAVY emphasis on world building. Ys was always a little simpler in story approach. As long as it is still pretty swift and accessible, I don't mind more story driven material.

Let me get some good characters, but get Adol back to "explaining the situation" and back to stabbin.

NISA always leads western releases of Falcom games with thier original platform of release in Japan ( Which currently is PS4 100% of the time) Then puts it on other platforms half a year later

Well XSEED wouldn't have ported it to anything it would just be PS4 and nothing else

It's part of the reason falcom switched to NISA because they could promise multiple ports
