Also the way 9 splits your party up all the time is pretty annoying. 8 does it too but it's simple to just switch gfs around

I feel the same way. I replayed 8 many times. 9 I was done with after beating it initially.

Does IX have that ability to speed up battles to 3x speed? I liked that in VII and VIII, couldn't finish it otherwise without getting crazy bored.

Pretty sure it does if you hold a trigger. There should be a setting in the options for it.

Yeah it's not as simple as ff8 because by then the dualshock had been created

I bought it because I had fun with 8/9 I just haven't got around to playing it

I'm playing 9 on the Vita and while I'm liking it a lot for the most part, the battles are so SLOOOOOW.

FF9 is my fave game of all time and even I fully admit the battles are too slow.

My discs on the PS1 were scratched (don't blame me, I didn't do it) and I always assumed it was due to those scratches. Later I learned, no. It's that slow for everyone.

Plotwise though, art style, music, characters, Hot'n'Cold, Cards, story progression etc. It's a masterpiece.

Even the combat isn't "bad" it's just too slow.

Nobody will defend that IX is slow. The creator of the game says IX is slow and said the PS1 wasn't strong enough to handle what they wanted to do with the game.

The best thing a lot of these remasters did (9 and 12) was add speed up options to the games

even FFIX fans won't deny that the battles are too slow, especially the battle intro that takes 5 seconds before you can input a command.
but on the other hand, almost every other aspect of the game (excluding OST, player's personal taste on aesthetics, etc) is better than VIII.

Both games suffer from having poorly fleshed out character like freya and amarant in 9 but 8 feels like the entire cast aside from squall and rinoa are left behind

i remember when ff9 was new and the internet seemed to hate it
then those people got older and stopped using online forums as much
and then people who played ff9 when they were kids started posting it and the internets attitude towards it did a 180 and now is a sacred cow you cannot talk negatively about
its a good game but its not flawless

Doesn't surprise me at all since 9's tone is a lot more childish (despite the mass genocide) compared to FFVII and FVIII's boring edginess where teenages drive cars and use guns

I can imagine the 18-30 year olds playing it on release felt like it was back to the tone of the original Final Fantasy games. Which it was. And they saw that as a bad thing

And that's worth the trade off of the characters having no personal identity in battle and all just being the same exact fighter?

FF8 falls apart after the assassination attempt to end Disc 1. You start Disc 2 in that prison and it's like *turns off game*

One thing I think we can all agree on is that the Limit Break/Trance system in both games is awful.

FFVIII is broken as fuck and pretty much forces you not to cheese it to enjoy the game.
And FFIX is stupid as fuck, 90%+ of the time activating in a random battle and effectively useless.

FFVII and X did it so much better. Let us decide when we want to use it. Make us earn it, but once we have it, let us use it.

I love ff8's soundtrack premonition and the extreme are both amazing

I just really liked 9 because it was a return to true final fantasy medieval-ish ages compared to 7 and 8's more modern takes

slow battles are the biggest one gameplay wise but it has some problems with its plot
for one freya's storyline just stops. doesnt really end it just stops. thats because it was going to be resolved in a sidequest that they never got around to implementing

the other ones are more subjective but they bother me a lot
when the party split up into 4 groups of 2 this should have been a boss rush where you got to fight each boss. just weaken each boss a bit so that all 4 boss battles combined would equal the length of a regular boss battle.

just fighting the one boss in that scene was a let down

and the other big flaw is beatrix. the party never defeats her so it makes the climax feel cheaper because you know that if the party fails there is someone more powerful than them in the background who can just come and fix everything. the game should have had the party at some point clearly surpass her but that doesnt happen

I played FF9 and 8 as a teenager and absolutely hated 8. So without nostalgia goggles FF9 was better for me than ever other FF game. This was in 2008/09

8 is great until disc 2 and then it becomes absolutely convoluted and a complete mess. Conveniences the game.

9 is a masterpiece of the FF legacy and format. While I can understand it not being everyone's favorite, it is timeless and wonderful.

8 has a special place in my heart because it was my first final fantasy
the only final fantasy i outright dislike is final fantasy 2
im not to fond of ff13 but i dont hate it and am planning on replaying it soon.

but i feel that ff8 falls apart on disk 3 and never really recovers
well to be honest it falls apart at the end of disk 2 with one of the most infamously dumb twists in video game history but how dumb it is doesnt sink in until disk 3 because the twist is followed by the garden battle which is the most exciting part of the entire game

8 was funner that story was pure trash once you hit Timber Garden...that orphanage twist and eyes on me and Squall in general ruin that game for me. 9s gameplay and side content were bad in comparison but it had a way better story.

It's a mixed back
Eiko as you said is worthless.
Quina's cook is pretty worthless.
Amarant's is worthless.
Garent's random summoning is random but pretty worthless.
Freya's is meh but at least creative.
Steiner's is good although incredibly dull.
Vivi's is good
Zidane's is actually good and pretty OP.

Defo defo defo could have been a lot better tho. The entire Trance system is a mess and the game would lose next to nothing if it was removed. It's like it was not playtested

I agree with all these points (Boss rush especially) but I wouldn't consider them major flaws. Just minor ones.

I also don't think you needed to beat Beatrix, there's nothing wrong with having a character who is canonically stronger than the party member. But I do agree it's kinda dumb they never explain why she doesn't help out. That needed ironing out.

Like make her get beaten up by Kuja but weaken him a little for you in the process or something.

Disc 4 is just a mess and that's just one of the many reasons why
