COVID-19 + New Console Launches ate up most of 7nm Waffer starts + Shortage of key supplies in IC manufacturing. + High Shipping Costs + Shortage of Shipping options where everything is booked.

Also alot of people work from home, so demand is through the roof while supply is at a all time low.

Then there's Crypto Miners + Scalpers + Bots

Then buy that when it's available, but realistically, this generation of GPU's is going to extend the normal 18 month GPU life cycle by another year or so due to COVID.

So don't expect the 7000 series to be here too soon.

Maybe I could get all the parts I want now but cheap out on the cpu. Since its all socket AM4 I could literally just upgrade the CPU and nothing else later. But a ryzen 3000 series is still 300-500 bucks which is a lot for a temporary cpu...

That's wasting your money, don't do that.

AM4 is the end of the road for Zen 3.

Zen 4 is going to be on AM5, and there are rumors of a Zen3+ coming as a interim solution before Zen4.

So just be patient, trust me, it'll be worth it.

You'll get your Zen3 or Zen3+ CPU in a few months when things calm down.

Im not familiar with AMDs terms since Ive been entirely intel up until now. What is zen3 and zen3+? at the moment Im still on a intel mobo so if I get a am5 mobo out of the gate is that going to support all 3 of sen3, zen3+ and zen4? Whatever those are?

why wouldnt there be a zen4 on socket AM5 cpus?
Zen 4 will be on the new AM5 socket along with DDR5

Zen 3 is currently on the AM4 socket and Zen3+ is rumored to get a few minor performance improvements while being on AM4 socket as well.

If you wait patiently, you'll be rewarded with the CPU of your choice.

Zen is the CPU architecture used.

Ryzen is the public product Model name / Family name.

Ergo Ryzen 1000 series, Ryzen 2000 series, etc.

They haven't even finished releasing the entire 5000 series product stack & COVID hit.

So give it some time.

Zen 4 will probably be 2022-2023

All Biden has to do is sign a few papers and the tariff exception gets reinstated.

Go harass his staff on twitter to tell him to make those exceptions for PC goods and PS5/XSX

actually my current pc is now dead so im moving up my plans to build a pc to now

my current options regarding a cpu are:

1) buy a ryzen 9 5000 cpu from an ebay scalper. i think i found one for only $200 more than retail
2) buy a ryzen 5 2000 for $300 and wait for a legit source of a ryzen 9 5000

buying from a scalper might be cheaper technically but it feels morally wrong

also what ram should i get

righty-o

i think ive settled on the ryzen 5 3600 as my temp CPU, and i want to build the rest of my pc as if i had a r9 5950 already

i noticed the r5 3600 supports ram up to 3200mhz. If i buy faster ram (i was considering 3600 or 3800mhz), will it still work?

im going with the x570 tomahawk motherboard, and a 1tb 980 pro nvme boot drive

Because depriving stock means those who bought it up can then flip them for much more money.

It's a very simple principle.

Yes you'll be fine with faster RAM. You can probably get away with a 970 evo plus and save a bit as the speed will be negligible for the price.

actually, i checked the amd page for the 5950x out of curiosity and it too says up to 3200mhz memory supported.
https://www.amd.com/en/products/cpu/amd-ryzen-9-5950x
why is this? i thought for a 5950x you want 3600mhz or 3800mhz?

Yeah I'm not sure what the deal with that is. Typically you want to run faster speed RAM with Ryzen CPUs. I don't think I've seen 3800mhz speed ram outside of laptop memory so you'd want to go 3600. 4000mhz exists but the performance vs the cost is negligible at best. I paired my 5800x with 3600 mhz ram and it's been running great.

You generally don't want to exceed 3800 MT/s for RAM.

Once you pass the 3866 MT/s barrier, you'll receive a 2:1 RAM vs IF (Infinity Fabric) clock penalty.

If you leave the RAM underneath the 3866 MT/s setting, it'll still reeive the 1:1 RAM vs IF clock bonus.

So set your ram to 3800 @ most, and lower all the other timings as far as possible while maintaining stability and not increasing voltage.

That's how you achieve the fastest possible setup while maintaining reliability.
