Feels like Necron came out of nowhere. I suppose you can think of it as Necron being death personified and and big theme of FFIX is overcoming the fear of your own mortality but his sudden appearance wasn't done well if you ask me.
That's one of the few gripes I have with this game. Other complaints being the ridiculously slow battle speed if you don't use the speed feature and how the Trance system felt poorly done. I could never actually strategize around Trance. It was often wasted on normal enemies for me.

My final team was Zidane, Vivi, Garnet, and Freya. I went with my favorites of the cast. I liked Steiner, too. I found Eiko to be annoying and Quina didn't do it for me as a comic relief character. Amarant became slightly better towards the end but he was barely in the plot at all. I wish he had more of a presence from the start.

The music was great. It was interesting how the regular boss theme gave off a "Oh shit, this monster is going to kill us" vibe. It emphasizes how serious and intense the situation is despite most bosses being fairly easy. Different compared to the feeling of VII's boss fight theme where the player feels pumped up and ready to throw down.

The letter at the very end of the game was from Vivi? Meaning he stopped? That's depressing. Vivi was my favorite character in the game. He never left my party if I could help it. Anyways, it was a great game. If I had to rank the FF games I've played so far, it would look like this:

FF7 > FF6 > FF9 > FF7R > FF5 > FF3 > Type-0 >>>>> FF15 > FF8 > FF13

The last three could be arranged in any particular order honestly but at least I finished FF15. I have Crisis Core, 10, 10-2, 12, and 14 but no idea when I'll get to them. I'll purchase FF4 eventually but I'm not sure it I should go with the DS or PSP version.

I replayed FF9 a couple years ago and tbh it felt like they ran out of time/money towards the end of the development or something. The first half is so expansive and the second half has a bunch of places that are basically just hallways with bosses at the end

Definitely my biggest gripe with the battle system. Trance almost always was activated (and wasted) in random battles for me. It's like, I get that limit breaks in 8 were hilariously abusable and overpowered but they were perfectly fine in 7 so idk why Square had to over correct their balance in 9.

Yeah Vivi died (Kuja did too)

Necron does come from out of no where

Yeah, Necron is just... such a weird choice.

I know that JRPGs often throw in some random and unexplained bosses at times (usually just because there hasn't been a boss for a while and they want to keep the pace), but FF9 is the only game I've played where they've done that as a final boss, and right after a fight that already felt like a final boss both in scope and in story terms, noless.

FF9 is my favorite game of all time but Necron is just "insert boss here"

They just needed a tool for Kuja to save you

I also said those last three titles could be arranged in any particular order. It's just that I forced myself to finish 15 instead of 8 or 13. Nowadays, if I don't like a video game, I won't force myself to keep playing it.
