Nearest I can tell, abstract art is an artists medium. Meaning it makes sense to people that have training and experience in painting / creating art. A lot of painting is creating a bit of a visual trick. Abstract art is taking away as much as the visual trick as possible, only including the bare minimum shape and colors.

There's 2 kinds of abstract art. "Abstract" and "Aniconic"
Most of the time abstract art itself is art by virtue of it's creation. This usually means that unless the artist can explain it to you, you won't understand it. For example, using watercolors to make a simple painting that looks like it was created by oils. So you walk up to a highlighted exhibit and see the word "oil" painted in oil and a guy next to it saying "actually it was painted with watercolors" stuff like that.
