what makes it good?

looking for a new game but not sure if i really have the energy to dive into a long one that just ends up being mediocre where sunk cost fallacy starts to kick in and i'll be bored after 10-20 hours but just have to see it through the rest of the way.

I have always had a hard time getting into the DQ games as well, I know they are good, and I like similar games a great deal.

That art style though, something about it just rubs me the wrong way.

i think the art style and the gameplay is fantastic. the way the story is told however is dogshit. i love JRPGs but the way the whole main story feels like a sidequest really sucked to me. i lost interest around when you go to the school or university or whatever

It's a typical Dragon Quest game. If you've played them before, it is like putting on your favorite sweatpants. Can't say there is anything groundbreaking, but for me, the appeal was playing the same style of RPG I grew up on.

By the time (major spoilers) you resurrect Veronica with time travel shenanigans (IIRC) and defeat the final boss, only to find out there's another dungeon to go through, my interest waned. A few aspects came in spitting distance of DQ8.

I liked it well enough. I never did much of Act 3, though. They didn't have to keep it going, it just felt like they dragged it out. But at least I can't fault it for lacking content...

I also struggled with the difficulty. Stonger Monsters was more of a pain to deal with due to a lot of bullshit RNG. But if you turn it off, it's pathetically easy. Like, the easiest in the franchise. There's no middle ground.

I made it to the part where you go to the mermaid people and then you are supposed to go somewhere and do something, apparently some area that's around this cabin in whatever town where there is mermaid painting (I've not played it in 2 years or something so I don't remember the names), but I couldn't figure out where to go or what to do. I ended up finding some kind of ice village place and grinded there for lols but it wouldn't let me enter some door or something. idk.

Put it on Strong Monsters. It's boring as shit to me on the normal difficulty. I still only got like 15 hours in, but I enjoyed it on StrongMonsters. On normal I didn't enjoy anything. Story isn't interesting enough to make you keep going on it's own imi

Same for me, DQ11 (switch) was the first DQ I ever played and I loved it, because its a safe and comfortable classic JRPG without much surprises and it felt refreshing for me after playing many more modern ones.

It's good if you enjoy it, I just couldn't get into it because to me it has nothing going for it that makes me want to continue playing it. I slogged though 23 hours into the game when I lost all interest. The characters are boring and all, but 3 characters, lack any personality. The story is your typical run of the mill JRPG and the gameplay is stupidly boring. I got more engagement from Persona 5 and Octopath Traveler than this game... but hey at least this game is better than FF13 lol.

I started the DQXI demo on Switch and it seems fun. Even though some of those voices are ridiculous. Like Gemma's.

Is there anything else to the game besides battling monsters, though? Any interesting side systems? Judging by IGN's guide, there's just poker and horse racing.
