Former Miss Universe Ireland Fionnghuala O'Reilly was chased by a Trump supporter yesterday in Washington DC as riots unfolded in Capitol Hill.

She said that the man followed and yelled at her for wearing a mask while out for a run.

Taking to social media, the Irish-American model, who works for NASA as a datanaut, said that she was absolutely appalled to see the scenes in the city last night.

Im absolutely appalled. Im still shaken, she wrote on Instagram.

This morning, a man followed me, yelled at me, & chased me down because I wore a mask while on a jog. I had to run away from him to get away.

She also shared a video of the protester shouting at her.

He tells her that his grandmother is elderly and has beat the virus and can be seen running towards her before the video cuts off.

My grandmother is 75 with diabetes and she beat Covid, but here you are, running around with a mask on and like 33. Videotape me, I dont care, the man shouts.

This violence, this chaos is disgraceful. Our city is being terrorized, Ms OReilly wrote later.

She said that the riots have completely gone too far.

The attacks have only gotten worse. This has completely gone too far. If you are in the city, please stay safe and stay home, Ms OReilly pleaded.

The model currently lives in Washington DC, where she is a Correspondent with the CBS Unstoppables. She is also a Director at NASAs Space Apps challenge.

The former beauty queen was crowned Miss Universe Ireland in August 2019. At the time, she worked remotely from Dublin and her base was in Washington DC.

She attended the George Washington University in the States and lived in Ireland on and off for several years.

Clouds of virus can linger; crowds could be down or upwind; it's just nicer to not have as much exhaust and such in your face; you can stop and talk to people in a distanced way if you do need to chat; you'll be protected if you come to a crosswalk with lots of people and need to stop; you may need to run some errands and it's easier and cleaner to not take your mask on and off; partial anonymity from cameras (she's in DC); partial SPF protection without sunscreen because sunscreen is gross.

Not being snide, but those are all the reasons I wear mine on walks. Plus I guess a Ms. Universe might do it to keep some catcalling down.

If you walk through the same air that someone else ran through under five minutes ago, it totally can. It's not like a miasma that loiters with intent, but shit caught on the air can live for over an hour in some cases. It's rare that it'll waft anywhere but to the ground, but there's no reason to not wear a mask when you're jogging around Capitol Hill, where hundreds of other people will be doing the same thing every day, even on days without sedition afoot.

It's talking about what airborne transmission of a virus is. The article doesn't make a distinction between indoors and outdoors, other than to say to avoid crowded, indoor spaces. It says that airborne transmission of this particular virus is rare and that "mask use in the community" is part of a sufficient interventions strategy. You asked why someone would wear a mask and I gave about eight solid reasons, which includes the rare-but-plausible risk of airborne transmission when running around populous areas. The article backs me up plenty for what it needed to do, which was provide grounding of why a layperson would do it.
