I use jump packs daily for my work.
Not every pack has a power button.
If you connect the clamps and the LED lights light up, then it is providing power.

I use the Clore ES5000 and Truckpack ES 6000 daily.
My personal pack I use at home is a Motomaster Eliminator 1000a Lithium.

Connect it first and wait about a minute then try to start the car.

If it still doesn't work then IDK. I've never used a power pack that had to be turned on. You can jump a car with just a battery by itself.

For winter. Emergency boosting is very common in colder climates. To the point where most tow companies will drive out to you and boost you for a fee.

TC here is a web page that has a download able manual for the exact pack you have.

Remove the negative first if your device doesn't have spark protection. Gases tend to collect at the positive post and can ignite if you take the red off first.

So long as the two connectors never touch, they don't touch metal, and you don't connect them backwards you'll be fine.

That's why I made this topic. Trying to learn. I learned by doing, not necessarily just by reading. I did read but I'm also kind of a dumbass so I need to ask the professionals to make sure I get things right. Apparently this shit is dangerous.

I've been zapped a good number of times, and even minorly welded a 10mm wrench to a car frame by accidentally sparking the battery.
It's scary the first few times, but you get used to it and you learn.

Hurts like a sumbitch though. I'm not sure what's worse, the low voltage high current of a battery jolt, or the high voltage low current of getting zapped by a spark plug or faulty plug wire

I'll take the battery jolt. Easier to cut contact imo. I usually end up being zapped for longer on plugs or wires. Though it's easier to get zapped without noticing by batteries and thinking "where did these blisters come from?"

Our hs power mechanics teacher got the whole class to stand in a circle holding hands while one kid held the spark plug from an old lawnmower motor so everyone could know what it felt like.

Only took about 8 tries to actually do 8t without some kid getting jumpy and yanking their hand away before the started got pulled. Lol

Without looking into it at all, I assume batteries are probably expensive. Like over $100 right? Or am I wrong? Regardless of price, I'm sure there's probably a very strict standard on what kind of battery you need, like what kind of voltage and stuff

Really the biggest thing is winter driving.
When you live somewhere it regularly goes below -20, batteries can drain or freeze up.
Now once you get it running and the alternator does its thing, you're fine. Boosters exist to start the car in a pinch, because a cold battery in winter doesn't automatically need replacing. And the new battery could end up the exact same way.

In warmer climates battery boosters are generally unnecessary.

AAA is nice, especially the roadside assistance.
They'll bring you gas if you run out, drive out and boost you, or even tow you if needed.
Every single person with a car should have some form of roadside assistance.
