IIRC you can't hold items onto your ass to block incoming shells in DD, so the Big Shells and Big Banana Peels provided better coverage if you wanted to try and time a block. As mentioned, certain characters had certain weight classes (light, medium, heavy) which not only affected their individual stats, but also which karts were available to them. In addition each team had their own special item that only THEY could use; Mario and Luigi had the Fireball, Peach and Daisy had the Heart Barrier, etc. Oddly this meant the best set-up was to deliberately avoid using the "canon" tag teams, since it gave you access to two special items instead of one.
