Nintendo's really been scaring the shit out of me. Between them delisting the DSi games unannounced, plus the dreaded March 31st is coming up. They've got me thinking about buying a bunch of the N64, GBA and DS games they have on the Wii U VC.

Is buying a bunch of them rational? I really don't want to miss out on some of these games, but at the same time my backlog is already an issue ugh.

out of curiousity, why would you want ds games on the wii u vc? Wouldn't it be better to just buy the ds games?

I imagine he wants to play the games, not create a museum.

Sometimes cheaper and is way more trustworthy than Ebay, I'm mostly worried about the N64 and GBA ones though.

Yeah I keep trying to tell myself that, I've never really delved into that yet tho.

If you're not opposed to emulators, that would definitely be the way to go. Trapping your games on the Wii U of all things seems like it would be far more hassle than it would be worth.

Then play them on an emulator instead of blowing a ton of money on digital versions of games that won't last due to Nintendo's archaic online standards

For one thing, there aren't many ways to play DS games on a monitor with a touch screen interface.

Can also mod a Wii U to play all of them.

while the Wii U is the best console emulator, and in the N64's case the best emulator period, i don't see a reason to lock yourself in like this. especially after they've already proven to get Switch emulators working - N64, Gamecube, and Wii were all proven with the Mario collection.

meanwhile you're thinking you probably won't get to them because backlog anyway so... why? if Nintendo discontinues it just pirate it. Wii U piracy has already hit a point where games will install like a normal, digital game, no difference. it's one thing if you don't want to pirate it because of moral reasons but for preservation? or a feeling of "don't want to miss out on this" like it's a rare chance, despite the current system already having working emulators they're exploring? if you want to play it down the road and are concerned about the moral implications, you can check to see if it's still available at that time. if it is, okay, buy it. if it's not, then they've locked you out of a way to play the game on the system, so there's no reason not to.

I guess that's a fair enough way to look at it. I do generally want to avoid pirating and would always prefer buying it legally.

I just really wasn't a fan of how they handled 3D All Stars and I kinda fear how their future emulation will be handled. Which leads me to the dilemma of playing Nintendo's potentially inferior port or do I stop supporting their emulation efforts and just play the illegal ones.

ahh, that's fair. i didn't play 3D All Stars because they were emulated but if there was some issue to their handling, fair. if it's Gamecube or Wii, Dolphin should still be the best one as with a powerful enough computer you can do stuff that's otherwise impossible, like upping resolution or framerate. but if you're looking for the closest thing to a 1 to 1 replica, Wii U does Gamecube and Wii extremely well since it's all on the exact same architecture, making the games perform either exactly the same or almost the same as they natively would, with the biggest differences being related to the shift from CRT TVs (e.g., audio issues, colors, lag). gamepad remains best for those, if possible.
