Canada had it right. You apply for for stimulus money only if you fit certain criteria. It was an honour system where the funds are automatically deposited into everyone who applies.

Avoids the situation where people who don't need it get a $600 cheque that means nothing while it is not nearly enough for those who really needs it.

Am I missing something?

Because the US government is beyond corrupt. We need to clean house in Congress. This shit is ridiculous.

The average tax rate for a US citizen is 25%. The percent of stimulus that are payments to the people is 6%. Like really how fucked is that? Its not like they said we dont want to add another trillion dollars in debt. They said yeah were gonna add a trillion dollars, give you peanuts and youre still gonna pay for the rest.

Keep in mind over the pandemic US billionaires increased their wealth by over one trillion dollars. This shit is corrupt. I dont care what anyone says. Our government only cares about the rich. It is proven time and time again. Average people barely getting by are left to fend for themselves every time.

And approximately 1/4 of Canada's CERB claims (441,000 out of 1.8 million) are being recalled or called back because people didn't meet the eligibility requirements but claimed anyway. Safe bet this was one of many sticking points about how to go about it.

Not attacking you at all but thats easily fixable. If people exceeded the eligible salary then you could easily take it back come tax time. Unless theres something Im missing?

The issue was self employed individuals weren't supposed to be eligible and this was only caught after the 28 week program ended (so max $14,000) per person). Depending on how hard they were hit by everything themselves, they may not have the money at tax time either, let alone for the letter they're getting now.

And I'm not saying it's right, just pointing out why money for everyone is easier than trying to figure out specific needs in the moment as there's a lot of factors involved.

Governments do not pay for all of even most of their spending through taxes. That hasn't been a thing in your lifetime. The whole you need to pay for all spending with taxes is just a Republican talking point, it isn't a thing governments actually want or are trying to do.

They were giving $2,400 a month on top of state unemployment through July to those who lost their job, and even independent contractors could get that benefit. Now it's $1,200 a month to them so people who "really need it" are getting more than a one time payment.

"Those who need it" sounds like an incredibly broad, undefined criteria.

Who "needs it" Vs. who doesn't is too subjective. Good luck not only setting the bar, but upholding it in court.

Even an "income amount" isn't accurate whatsoever as cost of living varies so heavily from region to region.
