It's a matter of civil defense, don't ya know?

My mom used to always tell me to keep the car above half full because if you let it get empty, when you fill it up you'll stir up any dirt/small trash in the tank which could get in the fuel system and cause issues. <_<

I don't typically go to the gas station until about the 1/4 mark, especially since I've been driving a plug-in hybrid for the last few years.

I try to go before the light goes on usually, but I don't worry about it until I see it.

Only when it comes to cold months do I concern myself with that. Otherwise, I fill up once a week.

When ancient man screamed and beat on the ground with sticks, they called it WITCHCRAFT.
When modern man does the same thing, they call it GOLF.

In the winter I always do, other times I let it get under a quarter. I almost ran out of gas a few years ago during a storm though because the power was out everywhere and no gas stations were open, so I never let it get low if the weather is gonna be bad

I never put much stock in the reasoning.

She also didn't like to get gas if she saw the tanker at the station or had seen the tanker at the station recently because of the same, "it'll stir up trash"

lol... the fuel pump assembly is generally suspended inside the top of the fuel tank and never reaches the bottom. There will always be a small amount of unusable fuel in any gas tank, even helicopters for these exact reasons. The fuel pump has a small media filter on it, but there's also a finer micron rated fuel filter either under the car or the hood that removes any remaining contaminents that make it past the pump. The chances of contaminated fuel making it to your engine is pretty slim.
