Let me put it this way: If there's ANY doubt at all, any possible "asterisk" regarding the gender of the person I'm potentially dating, in either direction, I'd nope the fuck out of that situation.

I think LuciferSage's point made sense because at the time, there were actually mostly white men that did shit like that because, well, that's how things were back then. Not saying that was the correct way though.

If you're expecting historical accuracy in a Hollywood biopic, you are being willfully dense as to what purpose these movies exist to serve.

It's just a lack of understanding. The problem is that the issue is complex and full of mixed messaging. "SJW things" (I know, don't @ me) like saying "gender is a social construct" out of one side of a person's mouth and "but you can be born with the wrong body" out the other just adds fuel to the doubt fire, I am sure.

Admittedly, there are people I've met where I genuinely feel like they have a female brain in a male body or vice-versa, but there are also other people who are just seemingly really lost and mentally ill and are searching for any solution and end up going that route when they maybe otherwise shouldn't, but it's unpopular to ask questions these days (which is dangerous). I do think there needs to be a nuanced approach and each individual needs to be assessed differently as with any sort of difficult medical situation. There's no one size fits all. But it does feel like an awful lot of sad, broken people just decide that might solve their problems then it doesn't. In some instances, maybe the trans situation made them depressed or anxious, in others they're depressed or anxious and probably think "maybe this will make me feel better." Those issues each need different support.

Like anything in life, it's grey, and I feel the correct approach is to simply engage in dialog and see where you end up rather than just a spectrum of knee-jerk reactions. But there are clearly some people you can tell right from an early age that they are gonna have some soul searching to do, and it's totally kicking a person while they're down to make that struggle harder for no reason beyond "they're different."

I believe there are straight (duh lol), homosexual, bi, asexual, and trans people. Maybe it's ignorant of me, but I feel like everyone belongs to one of those groups and everything is just a variation of one of them or simply a fabrication by somebody seeking to feel special.

sometimes misunderstandings or disagreement with the transgender movement is wrongly portrayed as hatred of transgendered people.

As far as I can see the 2 main areas of disagreement with the transgender movement are
1) should rules that differentiate between the sexes because of the biological differences between the sexes continue to recognise the differences between the sexes or changed to be based on "gender" and based entirely on the gender the person claims to be regardless of biology, lifestyle, etc ?
2) should children be given body altering chemicals for them to transition or should there be an age of consent so that they have a better understanding of who they are, what they want and what the effects of the chemicals would be and be less vulnerable to being pressured into a decision by other people ?

note that neither of these disagreements constitute hatred of transgendered people but arguments on twitter can excalate...

There is absolutely no reason to hate or discriminate against these people.

Some folk hate and can't or don't want to understand things that are different from their life. This includes race, sexuality and religion too. It's a sad life for these people who are so closed minded that they spend their limited life getting hot and bothered over things that really don't effect their life at all. Humans are what they are though.

I absolutely do not understand it enough to have a strong opinion beyond live and let live.

Gender correction hormones and therapy seem to reduce suicide for those suffering gender dysphoria, so that looks like a good thing outcome wise. Two spirit and other non-binary-conforming genders have existed throughout history.

As for concerns about confusion or irreversible decisions at a young age, I've discussed this with my partner regarding if one of our children expresses gender dysphoria and we both came to the conclusion that we know very little so would have an expert involved who knows more than us and do our most for support.

Live and let live I think is the main attitude I have. Try to be understanding. It doesn't affect me, so just try to understand and hope people can live their best life.

And shut down haters if you see them.

The problem with movies that want to rewrite history a little bit to show how things should have been is that they're dishonest and, even if well-intentioned, a whitewash -- because they lie about how things actually were. You don't make it any easier for people to understand why women had to fight for equal rights in an era in which they were denied them by pretending they already had them.

This really hits the nail on the head. A lot of people are very invested in a religious worldview that rejects homosexuality, for example, and transgenderism really kinda fucks with that in their view. Of course, these people don't usually acknowledge the existence of intersex people messing up that belief system either. Or that history has multiple examples of worldviews allowing this (because only their worldview is the correct one).

edit: also rigid masculinity being threatened is a major part too

This is by no means the cause all of the time, but having a schizophrenic friend and watching interviews with schizophrenics...it's remarkable how many of them suffered sexual abuse as children and have superimposed their experience onto all of society.

That you should not be allowed reassignment surgery? That you and people like you should not even be allowed to live?

Look, I don't envy filmmakers who are confronted with the dilemma of either (a) pushing acting talent back into the shadows because it's not white enough, male enough, or straight enough to be authentic to the story they're telling, or (b) distorting and sanitizing history in such a way that it makes the struggles for racial and sexual justice look like needless petty squabbles because the past was a golden era of tolerance and inclusivity. Either way, they're going to be accused of a whitewash -- of one kind or another.
