We're getting a bunch of tickets in this morning from users who are unable to punch in their times, especially if they are working remotely (where it can be done via a web interface). Turns out, it's because the programmers took the system down for an upgrade that they say won't be finished until tomorrow, and that people working remotely will have to tell their supervisors of their times.

....Don't you think that's something that should have been sent out in an organization-wide email the day before?

It's not the programmers responsibility to tell people that. Hell they shouldn't even be really be applying the upgrades.

Ah, time tracking issues. Earlier this week the website for my companies time tracking had unscheduled maintenance to fix something, so no one could punch in, we got a ton of emails with people screenshoting the page saying what is going on, they can't login can you fix it? Do people not understand the words: Unscheduled Maintenance?

Oh, NOW they sent out the email.

Well, better late than never, I guess.

I don't know if our System Admins are helping them or not, but the programmers here definitely do work on upgrades of certain systems/applications.

This, sounds like support dropped the ball not development.

Usually what happens or at least in larger companies is there's a Systems / IT team responsible for Operating System patches and ac separate Operations team that does software patches. You usually don't want developers messing around in live environments. When things get smaller though developers will do the work of all three of those departments + QA combined.

In our organization, the programmers are part of the IT staff.

It's all just a way to inject a blue-collar "time clock" into a white-collar office-space.

It's almost entirely done for tax purposes. The hours I spend on new development count as R&D which my company gets a tax break for, hours I spend on bug fixing or maintenance don't. Not to mention you might have contract workers who get taxed differently.

Well, it's not the programmers job to coordinate system or company wide alerts. The programmers were given a job to upgrade / maintenance from management. Wouldn't it be the managers fault for A) not coordinating for such an event and communicating to users and B) not understanding or requiring the details entailed in such a process from the programmers
