I read a topic here (https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/400-current-events/78868310) and it made me realize that students of color are in danger of discrimination in the school system.

Imagine you are a student of color and have a MAGA teacher, like the one in the topic I linked to. You know, the black lives don't matter, blue lives matter, coronavirus is a hoax, leave confederate statues alone type of teacher. How do you know she won't grade you lower than your white peers?

It may not be too obvious: If both of you answer 2+2 = 5 in a test you both get it wrong. But say she leaves homework, something like please write what you admire about George Washington.

Imagine this is the white student's response:
"George Washington is a pretty cool guy. He kick out brits and he not afraid of ANYTHING". He gets a B because of some grammar.

Imagine this is the black student's response:
"I feel very inspired by one of our founding fathers, George Washington. Through his courage and dedication, he ensured a vibrant future for our new, young country, one in which we can all thrive and survive. His selfless dedication and courage are an example for us all" He gets a B- because his response was short in historical context, includes no dates or footnotes and is too short.

These are homeworks, and students rarely compare homework grades, plus, at a young age, they just don't know better. This sort of discrimination will end in lower grades for the students of color, which will result in a tougher time getting into college.

And if you think this is bad, consider how much discretion a teacher has to grade "class participation".

My idea? ALL grading has to be done anonymously. Homework gets emailed and instead of the student name they use a student ID #.

It would just be more boring history to suddenly forget the exact moment a quiz happens.

I agree it is likely a problem (unconscious bias) but not sure what the solution might be

I thought this topic was going to be about how schools turning online puts people of color and poor people at a disadvantage. Since not everyone has a steady internet connection.

Essays were always bullshit imo. There's no right or wrong. It's just whether the grader likes what you have to say.

Those can be graded objectively, but they rarely are.
Regardless, essays are nothing more than meaningless busywork.

No, its whether you can construct and support your argument well, if youre talking English. Construct and support your argument, research and cite relevant literature in history, etc.

No they cant, unless your only criteria is did they do it, did they have a thesis, etc. rubrics are not objective

OP, what matters more to your education is location and your home environment. You want to be in a district with schools that are well funded and have access to good teachers and resources. And even more importantly, you AND YOUR PEERS want to be living in a strong family environment. Most of the learning is taught at home, not the school. And you need to be on the same page as your fellow classmates. If too many are from weak households, they'll come in with socialization issues and disrupt the class and ultimately drag down the learning experience.

A lot of my teachers did this with big assignments. It may have been required by IB, but I'm not sure.

I don't buy the premise of this topic. While there's certainly some anti-minority teachers out there, teachers being racist is not some huge issue. Tbqh a teacher is far more likely to discriminate against a student for being a conservative then for being a minority. Especially in college.

listen you little man, many universities grade like this.

When you sit for the test you don't put your name in the test. You put your student #. That way the exam is graded without bias.

But I guess you're too young for college or not smart enough to pursue higher education. Whatever the reason is, I do not get why you are coming here to attack me. Your posts ITT reek of small D energy

It may not seem like a huge issue. But how do we know? We need a metric to track how an average student in a specific socioeconomical range does comparied to his or her white peers in the same school, and then break it down to what specific subjects that relates to.

In the end the effect would be seeing a potential a or a- guy get a b or b- average, which is not such a high priority. This may be underreported.
