This, but not really in the sense of caring a lot about possessions and whatnot

Not particularly. I mean I do enjoy things. But I usually enjoy things with a function the most. Never been particularly big on jewelry or fashionable clothing and stuff like that. But I'm certainly not a monk with no worldly possessions

I only buy items I use excessively when the last one breaks. So, no. Very rarely do I buy luxury items, if ever. Definitely not vanity items.

hypothetically what if you won the lotto or something? then you'd buy a lot of vanity items?

At this point in my life? No. Id get more joy out of seeing others get use out of the money. Id most likely just walk around helping people out and siphoning off their energy lol. I'm a really simple person. This whole summer I've just been going to people's houses and doing yardwork for free. Just out of boredom. They offer me money and I just decline cause I don't care to think about what Id even do with it >_>. None of my hobbies that cost money interest me much right now. I usually just let them buy me food or give me weed. I don't see why life has to be so complicated for everyone else.

Of course. Im not naive enough to rule out that this is just how I am because of circumstances and if I dipped my toe into wealth that Id fall into the same bullshit everyone else does. That's exactly what makes me not want to dramatically change my lifestyle with money. I like the person I became while broke and I want to keep that guy.

Yeah I'm not gonna deny it. I may not buy some pretty jewelry or ugly paintings but I'm still gonna end up buying some cool movie posters or Funko Pop.

No. I grew up always needing important things and "needing" a lot of dumb shit but only getting the latter. I got a lot of the things I "needed" - like toys and games - especially relative to how poor we were. It was just shit, shit that usually didn't last long. If it did, it never functioned the way I wanted to with regards to all the hurt and strife in my life.

I've spent the last few years getting rid of my possessions and buying less pointless shit. I had some valuable stuff that I sold for relatively cheap because the reaction the buyers had was way more meaningful than junk sitting in a closet for years.

I just enjoy living a meager life tbh, not worry about anything that I don't need to. Ideally, I'd live off-grid, growing my own food, building what I need, but that's not realistic at the moment and probably not any time soon.

Not in the slightest. I buy books and sometimes video games, and the rest of my extra money goes towards investing.

Materialism is a form of philosophical monism that holds that matter is the fundamental substance in nature, and that all things, including mental states and consciousness, are results of material interactions.

for the purpose of this topic, the most relevant part is that humans' material conditions determine their ways of thinking.

for example, you might be familiar with Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. it's depicted as a pyramid, with basic physiological needs (food, water, shelter, etc) at the bottom. the idea is that higher-level needs only really become available once lower-level needs are met.

another example is how prevailing societal attitudes become internalized and are reflected in the things that people create. like how most of the classic broadway musicals feel extremely dated now in the way they tend to portray women. (note that the portrayal of women is far from the only thing about these musicals that's dated; it's just a particularly egregious example)

Fuck yea, when I was in college and didnt have much cash because of my part time job, and a new sneaker or something was coming out that I wanted, I would skip meals on some days so I could feel less guilty about buying it. Basically I would cut into my food budget when I needed to buy clothes.

I was wild those days lmao.
