Old job: - Constant 60 - 80 hour weeks being the only network engineer for the whole company
- Company trying to expand too fast for how many people they have in IT to support the existing stuff and the expansion
- Company didn't want to pay me more to make working that much more tolerable
- Company didn't want to hire more people so that I didn't have to work that much
- Too many people outside of IT making decisions about IT infrastructure
- Couldn't take a real vacation because I always had to work
- Tons of "priority 1" projects popping up all the time, pushing other things back for years
New job: - Network team is now about 16 people (A new person just started on Monday)
- Offshore support to handle minor issues overnight
- Network team is segmented from network security
- Multiple teams of people segmented by region to handle on-site work
- My boss assigns me a few things to do at a time and is careful not to give us so much work that we're working more than ~45 hours/week
- When I take vacation, I don't have to worry about work
So much better. I'm hoping I can be here for the rest of my career. ---
