very often people who try to cite statistics in an argument have no idea why the statistic came to be in the first place and just see a number and go "HOW CAN YOU ARGUE WITH THIS?!" as if it exists in a vacuum

There are definite ways to apply a racist view to things. Like all the shit about IQs or people who use crime statistics to act like Group X is inherently bad because they make up XX% of crimes and that kind of shit.
