I doubt it will reach the Wii's numbers, though.

yea, I remember the scramble for it being crazy when it first came out, and how difficult it was to find one in stores because they were often sold out.

...even I bought into the hype, lol.

It's a wonder Nintendo ever went back to traditional gaming with how well the Wii sold.

I don't really think the Wii U deserved that harsh of a treatment. The gimmick certainly didn't work because it's really hard to concentrate on 2 very detached but detailed screens. But it had a ton of really quality games, and the gamepad was oddly satisfying to use as a controller if not a bit heavy. They also wasted a ton of power transmitting to the gamepad screen, but it was actually a decently powerful console for the time to the point where the Switch wasn't really that much more powerful than the Wii U.

But yeah every time Nintendo goes for something that requires a lot of horsepower, they end up at the bottom of the sales history

weird that none of their systems outside the Wii/NES and now SWITCH have sold exceptionally well.

It only sold well because it was a novelty; going forward, there was nothing Nintendo could have done with the motion control gimmick.

Not that weird.

-SNES had heavy competition from the Genesis.
-Playstation completely stomped the N64, especially since most of Nintendo's long-standing third party partners shacked up with Sony due to the hardware.
-The PS2 did even better, and with the Xbox also around, the GCN had little room to breathe (it did get more big third party games than the N64 did, but most were still on PS2 amd now Xbox).
-Nintendo fucked up the Wii U themselves, giving it an awful name, trying to repeat the Wii's success, and not properly marketing it or emphasizing the fact that it was a completely new console and not just a Wii tablet add-on.

I don't care what anyone says, the Wii U had a pretty good library actually. But most of the good games just got ported to Switch. Still waiting on Fatal Frame V myself since I never got to play it.
Don't forget Xenoblade X. Still waiting for a port of that one.

How does it compare to the Gameboy? Not really fair to call it a home console when it's more of a gigantic leap in handheld gaming.

Most people who bought the Wii left it to dust after a few months, too. Same with the Kinect and PS Move. Motion controls were never going to replace basic controllers.

That said, the GameCube was proof Nintendo can't last doing making traditional consoles. They need gimmicks to set themselves apart from the rest of the competition; Wii U failed because its particular gimmick was forgettable, not to mention its terrible name and marketing.

There's also TMS:FE# which I've been kinda wanting to try even though I'm not big on JRPGs. But from what I've played, SMT is more fun than most other ones.

Also, I can't believe that I left out Splatoon 1. Damn, the more I think about it, the more I realize that Wii U was pretty stacked actually.
yeah its a big part of why the SWITCH is doing so well imo, they essentially put an entire generation of great games on the SWITCH for free since almost no one had the wii u.

Wikipedia has the Gameboy (all non-Advance versions) at 118 million units, the Gameboy Advance at 81.5 million units, the DS at 154 million and the 3DS at 75 million. So it would go NES > 3DS > GBA > Wii > GB > DS
