I think she was also in the 1980's Suicide Squad comics for a bit. But for the movie, they made her an independent agent that the main guy knows (Rick Flag). But the long and short of it is that Suicide Squad is just a s*show and not really worth analyzing beyond it being s. Ostrander's Suicide Squad runs is one of the all time greats and it is disappointing that the movie clearly took a page from the more modern incarnations of the team.
