God I wanted to go to Space Camp so bad. I wish I wasn't born poor. This movie came out right after the Challenger disaster. As you can imagine, that made marketing difficult to say the least. The movie had been filmed right before the Challenger explosion so it's not like they were intentionally trying to capitalize on the disaster. But I'm not sure everyone say it that way.

Critic Roger Ebert gave it a one and half star rating, saying that "Our thoughts about the Space Shuttle will never be the same again, and our memories are so painful that SpaceCamp is doomed even before it begins."

Ebert trashed the film just because of the Challenger disaster. It's too bad. I loved it as a kid.

RIP Tish. You survived a mission to space led by the girlfriend from Temple of Doom. That was an accomplishment in itself.

I know what youre asking yourself. Is that Joaquin Phoenix standing with a discount R2D2? Yes. Yes, it is. No wonder he got so angry and started dressing like a clown. He wasnt even cool enough to hang with the real R2.

Nobody wanted to go to SpaceCamp as a kid? No wonder the shuttle program failed.

Come on guys. We can watch it together. Apparently Disney+ is rebooting this. No idea how that will work without a shuttle program. Is Elon going to cameo? I wouldnt call a major launch disaster a good PR move.

Jink and Joaquin.
Friends forever.

I rather talk about Mischief. I know it's not popular to talk about dead people being naked, but she looked great in that. Godspeed Ms. Preston, you made young me addicted to a certain Mr who had Skin.

Not to mention being stuck in space with the future Joker, Hercules, Lorraine McFly, and Lamar from Revenge of the Nerds.

I LOVED that movie, and I went to Space Camp/Space Academy three times! I didnt remember that Kelly Preston was in it, though (just Lea Thompson).

I mainly remember the scene where they totally screw up in the flight simulator and kill everyone and get chewed out by the teacher.

Did you fly a space shuttle simulator or do anything like the movie?

Kind of, yes. There was a cockpit simulator. We also went on a spinning thing (it has a name but Im old and senile).

Space Academy was for older kids and had actual classes. They kept kicking my chair because I kept falling asleep. There was college credit involved, so I guess thats why they cared. Near the end there was a 24-hour simulated mission. We each were assigned roles; I was the PAO. I got to make announcements to the public about the progress of the mission.

It actually was really cool. My family was not wealthy, but my parents spoiled me.

ETA: oh, yeah, and there was a big water tank for simulating weightlessness (with SCUBA gear). And we got to tour Marshall Space Center.
