My mom is a 60yo cancer survivor. She is a teacher and still relies on her works health insurance to cover all her meds. So what the fuck is she supposed to do here? Shes extremely high risk to die if she is forced to go back to work, and guaranteed to die if she doesnt.

Subs cannot teach without a credential, and if theyre credentialed theyre almost certainly already teaching

If teachers want to stay home, they shouldn't get paid. Just like everyone else. If you don't want to work because you're scared, that's fine, but don't expect to be collecting a pay check. What's unfair about that?

my wifes a teacher and the plan they have in place makes no sense.

they want 50% of the students in every other day, yet the teachers go in every day. So if a student comes in and is asymptomatic or somehow gets into school despite a fever (and good luck holding parents accountable) they would infect a teacher and the other kids coming in the next day would be around that teacher regardless.

the particular students my wife works with are on the spectrum and MANY of them have poor hygiene as it is due to parents who dont give a fuck. Also - good luck having a low functioning child adhere to masks and social distancing.

so if the city is hell bent on enforcing these rules but yet puts teachers in direct line of fire I dont blame them for walking off the job. Hell they deserve hazard pay.

is the virus only dangerous at restaurants and stores? This is what I dont understand. NYC DOE is allowing teachers to fill out a form to be excused from showing up to work in person but work from home so long as they can prove they have pre existing conditions or going to work would be a extreme hazard to a family member they live with. My wife and I are trying to have another baby now, so if my wife gets pregnant after the school year starts is she not allowed the same benefit?

also they already cut funding for the teachers choice program where teachers get a $200 stipend to buy supplies. The schools as far as she knows wont be supplying sanitizer and tissues.

its a giant cluster fuck that many districts has since March to come up with a plan.

ALSO add to the fact that the NYC school building infrastructure is fucking archaic where many buildings have never been repurposed with proper air conditioning or circulation. Many classrooms dont even have windows.

its an absolute petri dish for the virus.

yep. Education is one of the few majors in college where youve been pretty much guaranteed to find a job right after you graduate.

lots of young teachers too. Switching from in person teaching to online instantly with almost no support from administrators was a disaster this past spring.

and itll be bad again because were give no notice. And no support.
