The way I see it, the coronavirus is fully capable of becoming the next major virus that will continue to ravage humanity for x amount of decades. Too many things are being found out about the disease, and we're barely starting to get an idea of some of the long term effects of the coronavirus.
I don't see this pandemic going away in 5 years, especially if you consider how complicated it is to deal with the virus/new strains and a increasing amount of folks not taking the virus serious (including the US president, in which he's just enabling people to not tKe it seriously) thus continuously spreading the virus/helping the virus survive longer than it needs to.

I'd say until 2021 if we had better leadership, but with the way it's being handled now I don't feel comfortable giving any date or time frame.

I think there will be a panacea in 5 months but there is a chance we are being judged so if people don't behave there will be no panacea. stop judging people is a good start.

Can you please point out where he said stay inside for 5 years? Clearly I must have missed it.

It will go on until it disappears or there is a vaccine, period. That doesn't mean it will be like this the entire time, you just need to get it under control and have the tools in place to fight it should it come back. We have seen that this is possible with New York. New York isn't shut down, the entire state is open up to varying degrees with most being in phase 4 of 5, even NYC is doing well. That doesn't mean the pandemic is over for NY. That's what we need the entire country to do, fight back and get it down, then keep it down. It will still be a pandemic, but people will be able to live semi normal lives.

Theoretically, couldnt we starve out the virus by sitting inside for a month or two?

The person you are quoting thinks staying at home for over a day is the worst punishment someone can deliver to him.

The most important thing to note is the viruses survivability.
Even if people stayed indoors, the virus has progressed enough to infect other animals, and it may be able to survive a unknown amount of time on various surfaces/stagnant air/shoddy air circulation
