The remake on psp. I actually beat book 1 a while ago but just finished book 2 about an hour or so ago. I can definitely see how this was originally supposed to be one long game, the ending portion of book 2 ties really nicely into book 1. Story and characters were surprisingly good for a game released all the way back in 1987. The music was top-tier. Both of them together, Id give it a solid 9/10

bump combat is so much more enjoyable than I wouldve expected. Mowing down enemies is cathartic. Leveling up in the first game especially was really gratifying, because of how much it affects your damage

Wow. You must have really liked them. I can't even imagine how blown away you'll be when you play literally any of the next Ys games, like Oath, or 7, or even Celceta.

i find Im usually pretty generous in how I rank games. I do it on less of a bell curve/percentile in which I compare games to each other, but rather just rank them on how much I enjoyed them for what they are. Like, keeping in mind the type of game Im playing, (an old school ARPG with old school design) it was much better than what I expected. Strong 8.5, solid 9

Is that the game that's spelled Ys but is pronounced Yeez?

pronounced more like ease
No Y sound at the beginning and the s makes a Z sound

Oh don't get me wrong, I liked those games too. In fact, my first exposure to them were the DS game of Books 1 and 2 and I loved those, even though I was told I should hate them because they're terrible third party ports. So when the improved PSP version came along it was an even more fun experience.

Think you'll play all of them? Ys Memories of Celceta which was on the Vita was just recently ported to ps4 so that's next for me, before playing 8.

Yeah I have Origins on my PS4 (and I guess Vita) which is what Im going to play next, but not anytime soon. I plan on playing all the ones available for psp/vita, which is most of them expect for VIII if Im not mistaken. I also want to check out the fan translations of the top-down SNES ones, even though theyre apparently not very good and also non-canon.

2 to the 1 from the 1 to the 3, a fitting end for a monster like me.

it was refreshingly simple. Stupid and doesnt require much effort, but thats what keeps all the dungeon backtracking from getting tedious. Those 2 design choices really complement each other

Yeah definitely good idea to play Origins next, if only because all the other Ys games are so much better so it won't feel like a step backwards.

I'd also like to play all the other Ys games but been waiting to see if they make a Ys 5 remake or port Ys 6 one more time.

I didn't mind it except for the bat boss in Ys 1. It felt good being able to kick his ass with decent controls in Origin.

yeah that Bat boss and Dark Fact took a lot of retries. All the bosses in Ys 2 were pretty easy, except for maybe the giant rotting head thing

Fair enough I just found it boring.

If the dungeons were simpler, the combat would have felt pointless and non-engaging. If the combat were more complex, then getting lost in those labyrinthine dungeons wouldve been ridiculously frustrating. The fact that its not frustrating means its acceptable for all the backtracking and artificial lengthing of the game to take place by all the you need X item to cross Y path or unlock Z door. Also every monster you kill gets you closer to leveling up, which is exciting because of how much of a power boost a single extra level gets you in this game.

All in all, the game is made up of extremely simple parts but it comes together to be greater as a whole.
