Salt and Sanctuary is truly a 2D Dark Souls game, moreso than others I have played. Maybe that and Blasphemous (ALSO RECOMMENDED).

Rogue Legacy is a bit more like Dead Cells except it's more lenient with progression (it actually saves after bosses).

Hollow Knight is superb. Dead Cells is fun but I hand to savescum the Hand because I was starting to get bored. I think there's other content beyond that, but honestly didn't seem worth it. I liked Rogue Legacy's approach better because the progression allows you to either be a true Roguelike minimalist if you want or just keep gaining strength until you can push through.

That's a good ass list. I'm having a hard time beating Dead Cells after the first run through tho. The only time I got to the final boss, he stomped me immediately.

I think Rogue Legacy is still my favorite. Maybe Hollow Knight.

Hollow knight was kinda milquetoast to me, if only because I played a LOT of metroidvanias before it and I didn't feel like the minimalist combat engine brought much to the genre that felt fresh. For perspective, my favorite metroidvania is La-Mulana, another indie one with comparable scope and a metric ton of density. I haven't played Salt and Sanctuary yet, but I support the other two games.

I also want to shout out Death's Gambit and Slain: Back from Hell.

Slain was super cheap, like $3.49 and I got 7 hours or so out of it. Great title.

Death's Gambit is solid, too.

Once you start unlocking the more crazy guns, items, and getting synergies the game gets pretty addictive.

I think it's my favorite cause you actually grow with every attempt. It's not just starting from scratch with a couple new options you might get.

Gungeon feels like an homage to quarter-grinding arcade games where replayability sorta ends when you win. It doesn't quite hit that magic balance that puts it in the same sort of addictive "one more game" category that a game like Binding of Isaac knocks out of the park.

Presentation is important. Hollow Knight doesn't bog down its extremely tight controls, gorgeous exploration, and intriguing atmosphere with an overwhelming density of filler. I can see how big fans of the genre might gravitate towards complexity, but Hollow Knight is one of the greatest games of its generation, partly due to its accessibility that allowed it to transcend the genre.

But that's what's neat about indie developers, in that there's room for both. You can turn a profit with a tight budget by aiming at underserved audiences, and that's good for consumers.

Dead Cells is probably the indie game that to me is the most fun to actually play, but I still don't like the methods of permanent progression it offers.

I would add Darkest Dungeon, Crosscode, Slay The Spire, Wizard of Legend and Katana Zero to the list.

These past 3-4 years have really been the golden era of Indie gaming.

I have over 600 hours on Slay the Spire, 300+ on Darkest Dungeon, 250+ on Dead Cells, finished Crosscode 3 times, etc.

My gaming playtime distribution is like... 60% indie games (mostly strategy, rogue likes and RPGs), 30% online MMORPGs/some MOBA sprinkled around (League of Legends) and 10% AAA games (last one I played was Doom Eternal and the next one will probably be Cyberpunk when it launches so a few more months).

Dude, that's like... The last thing I'd actually expect someone to complain about.

I think it's beautiful and very soothing. Going through the game is quite relaxing even with the fact that it is a rogue lite, and the characters are fucking adorable.

I'm 100% sure you'll change your mind once you actually play it. I definitely recommend it.

I'm not sure but I've heard good things. 2 is less good than 1 imo, it just misses on some of the magic and density in the first game. The puzzles feel tacked on rather than crafted as a core part of the design. I strongly recommend picking them up, but know that the game wants you to use your brain and a notebook
