Why would you want to be bound to the same person for all eternity? Does anyone seriously believe that the person they married is really their soulmate?

Notice how we humans are the only species on Earth that has a thing like marriage, while most other species practice serial monogamy (i.e. once their kids are all grown up they move on to the next partner whom they have more kids with). I (Butters) blame religion. Religion is clearly a religious institution whether we want it to be or not, and it's no coincidence that not only are we the only species with marriage, but we're also the only species with religion. Hmmmm...

That's your hangup? Religion and the idea of soul mates?

Not that marriage is a legally binding contract that allows the state to involve itself in your personal life?

Isn't marriage kind of a dumb concept?

I dont think so, I think it has its place in society still.

What is a dumb concept is the shit like diamonds and excessive extravagant weddings realistically beyond the couples means/earnings. Nothing wrong with having a fancy wedding but If you are spending the amount of a house down payment or the cost of a brand new car and are average joes........cmon man. That money can be used on the house and not starting your marriage off with financial burdens of a single night.

Also that basic bitch concept of 'the engagement ring should cost 3 months of the dudes annual income' or looking down on a ring that isnt diamond

Nothing really wrong with it but people rush into it then wonder why it's not working a year later. It's only sensible to live with someone for a few years before committing because once that initial lust phase wears off do you truly love them and love being with them? Do you really want to spend the rest of your life with them? It's a massive commitment that I think is approached far too casually.

Also couples need to do what they want to do - not what others think and not what society expects them to do.

I just don't see the point.

It annoys me that I still have people ask me when I'm going to settle down. I've lived with my girlfriend for a decade. We've bought a house together, have pets together, etc. We just aren't married because neither of us really sees any appeal.

The legal act of marriage is kind of convoluted and dumb at this point, but pair bonding seems to be highly encouraged by our genetics. Though at the same time, it seems there is some biological impetus for getting bored and moving on considering all the cheating.

All of you not getting married but living together with your partner remember to check to see if your state has common law marriage. If it does find out what it consists of so your not blind sided should you have to give her half your stuff due to common law legality.

If your state does not have common law marriage then do whatever but if there is common law marriage DO NOT LIVE TOGETHER.

tax benefits brah.

Tho it is horribly out dated than a guy is still expected to ask his boo's dad permission first.

"Sir, do I have your blessing to fuck your daughter for the rest of my natural life? I know she's full grown and can make these decisions herself, and has already decided to date me for several years, where we've had wonderful freaky pre-marital sex, but I figured I'd loop you in on the action since traditionally you're the one who has to pay for the wedding, sucker."

Cohabitation is not dispositive on the issue. CLM requires the couple to hold themselves out as married.

When you start commingling assets and future planning akin to a married couple is when the weight begins to shift the other direction.

Ah ok, its good that is only one part of the requirement, a lot of dudes need to protect themselves though.

No one should be screwed over by not knowing he is CLM in their states eyes and she is entitled to his things.

It used to be useful in regards to two partners pulling their time and resources together to work, provide, take care of the house and raise their children proper.

But now it's just a bad deal only still relevant becuase its pushed still as a societal norm. And most people naturally what to do the norm, be the norm, and fit in.

My girlfriend and I are opposed to it. We have no care for the spiritual or religious aspects, and even the financial benefits are negligible, and could possibly even put us at a disadvantage. My girlfriend doesn't make a lot of money, but she doesn't need a lot to get by, so our plan is for her to put money into her retirement account so she can qualify for either Medicaid or cheap marketplace insurance. If we got married she wouldn't realistically be able to do this.

The purpose of marriage is to encourage a commitment between a man and woman so that they can raise a family and better contribute to society. The woman has someone to support and provide her security to be better able to raise kids successfully. The man has more motivation to contribute to society because he has the responsibility to support someone back at home. The kids, having both parents in the house has a better chance of success in life.

We're in an age where a lot of guys are giving up on society, as evident by the incel population, and on the other extreme end, a growing population of women are hitting their late 30's into 40's while single. This is a growing societal problem that needs to be addressed.

The majority of men would love to be married if the divorce rates were not so high, and the infidelity stats were not through the roof.

Way to many horror stories of men losing their children, their sanity, and their lives because they got fucked hard in divorce.
