I used to love the second half (after obtaining the lordvessel) just as much as the first half. I generally love the aesthetic of Demon Ruins/Izalith, New Londo Ruins, Duke's Archieve etc....

But you can tell it's like they designed the first half first intricately... and the second half feels lazily slapped on top. Having a bullshit orange forcefield to block you off from areas is cheap and it should have been better intertwined with previous areas.

I actually do want a Dark Souls remake.

Yeah, I always just stop playing after Anor Londo (At latest after Dukes Archives) whenever I go back to it now.

I don't dislike the second part areas other than Izalith, but it's true the core design philosophy of the game's first half just doesn't exist in them, and that's a shame.

Yeah it kinda sucks honestly. All the areas are not nearly as well designed as the earlier areas like Asylum, Undead Burg, Anor Londo, etc imo.

I don't really understand the Bed of Chaos freakouts myself. Like it's a bad boss, one of the worst in the series (Ancient Dragon exists, so it can never be THE worst). The RNG is bullshit. All of that is true.

Okay, but so what? Go in and kill it, maybe die once or twice in the process, and get it over with.

Duke's Archives is one of the coolest areas of the game. It shouldn't get lumped in with the Izalith / Tomb of Giants hate.

It's the jank and the unpredictability.

Blighttown jank is manageable, if only because the worst of it is confined to one entirely optional pathway (with little payoff IIRC) and one less optional pathway (with a little bit of payoff).

What pisses me off is it just feels like I can never avoid dying at least once. I can breeze through the whole game with any build or any weapon I try but that fucker always gets me at least once and it drives me nuts

At least they gave us the benefit of checkpoints for each phase. It's still a bullshit fight, but it could have been so much worse.

I think the only thing stopping the Bed of Chaos from being one of the worst bosses in all of gaming is that your progress gets saved if you die. It's the single redeeming quality for the fight.

I made it a point to learn the BoC speedrun strat with the bow and firebombs recently, it's definitely saved me some time and gotten rid of the "Wonder if I'm sprinting back to get punted off the side again" feeling. It does when it works at least, I've had one case of BoC fighting back with the fire attack.

I dislike the orange walls too, especially since the game made it a point to let you bend New Londo out of shape by killing Ingward and fighting Four Kings early. It'd let you finish the game much earlier but you'd still have to get to Anor Londo to access Duke's Archives at least. You could kinda upgrade O&S' significance by having an optional "Well you got the four lord souls now you just need the huge bowl" route to things where you'd get some alternate text about what needs to happen and how.

Duke's Archive is great I agree but then it leads to the Crystal Caves which again has great aesthetic but once again is kinda a gimmick level.

Like it saves your progress if you do happen to die
