Animals kept in cages to no fault of their own at the leisure of humans and not knowing what their natural habitat is really like. If kids wanted to learn about animals, they can do so through a God damn textbook by national geography. Let's be honest here, zoos were something that you thought was cool as a kid because it was a field trip then you shrugged it off the next day.

"Natural habitat" is bullshit. As long as animals, humans included, have their base needs met (food, water, shelter, sex), they're content.

Zoos are important for conservation. Without them, many animal species would be extinct.

animals in zoos are not fit to live in the wild.
releasing them from captivity will essentially kill them because they have no idea how to hunt for food.
other reasons are for conservation efforts to make sure they don't go extinct.

Have you ever seen a lion pacing around its exhibit? It is bored out of its mind.

An elephant needs a ginormous territory to roam.
A great ape is freakin' intelligent and keeping them in a zoo is straight up torture.

Weird assumption that animals can be at fault for things.

male lions pretty much do the exact same thing in the wild.
all they do is sleep and mate.
it's the lionesses that do the actual hunting.

This is the most impressive big cat hunting video I've ever seen.
And even if it were true that lionesses do all the hunting, which it isn't, the denial of that opportunity is like an itch they cannot scratch.

hasn't it been proven that it keeps a lot of animals from going extinct? You kind of have to get a handle on poaching first, but that is a world-wide issue, and nothing can be done about it

people that have a problem with zoos dont really care about the animals. Its just another thing for some to complain about.

Because they're animals. We can do with them as we please. And zoos serve plenty of useful purposes, namely:

  • Preservation
  • Research
  • Breeding
  • Reintroduction into the wild of endangered species
  • Entertainment
  • Education

Yeah, no zoo worth its salt would use ANYTHING that people can stick their hands through. That's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

I went to the Toronto zoo a month ago and these animals have these giant sprawling habitats that they built for them they look like the real thing. Those animals have it damn good.

What do you think wild lions do all day? They really don't do much. Wikipedia has this to say:

Lions spend much of their time resting; they are inactive for about 20 hours per day. Although lions can be active at any time, their activity generally peaks after dusk with a period of socialising, grooming and defecating. Intermittent bursts of activity continue until dawn, when hunting most often takes place. They spend an average of two hours a day walking and 50 minutes eating.

And do you really think that zoos don't give apes anything to amuse themselves with? Any zoo I've been to that had gorillas or chimpanzees had all sorts of toys and climbing structures for them to do stuff with. Again I ask you, what do you think wild gorillas and chimps do all day?

Depends on the zoo. Many of them are influential in conservation and some do a better job creating habitats than their natural regions.

Life in the wild activates all the senses, stimulates animals in the way they were evolutionarily designed for and gives them everything they need to further their species by ensuring only the fit specimens survive.

This goes for all species.

Yes, in most species, the captive animals live longer but that's like saying a hospital keeps you alive by pumping you full of fluid.

Also, lol @ thinking toys and ladders are good enough.

Many, maybe even most, zoos at this point are less about capturing animals and more about rescuing them. They do good services, and the good ones go well out of their way to keep the animals happy and healthy.
