Covid hurt my boss' businesses just enough so that he had to cut back on payroll and that meant I got hit. He had to lose most employees at his second business, which is suffering more. I haven't had to look for work in almost 15 years. This is surreal and annoying. I'm not even mad. I was anxious as fuck to go back and I almost didn't want to (public transport is still in COVID levels now so I wouldn't have been able to go back for at least a few weeks.

I'm pissed off about this, but I am officially unemployed :( (and I hope I figure something out before too long)

I have been. It was temporary because virus so I've been collecting since I was put on hiatus, which is the best news.

Hiatus just turned to permanent lay off as of this week which is the bad news, but in the mean time I've been saving

unexpected from you, but thanks man. I appreciate it. I've thrown a few connections around but have not heard back so those connections might be dry but I have a 10 year reference under my belt too and some connections are in Boston which isn't super covid friendly these days. so we'll see. Getting my new AC fixed is most important (unbelievable motherfucker was missing one of the drain plugs and started leaking onto the floor immediately. That is some bullshit)

I assume youve learned yourself that loyalty to a job is a fools choice. Workers are not valued in this country

Good news is it's a family business so they aren't going to be all "lol fuck you good luck lol"

Boss was really emphatic about giving me recommendations/etc. and I could tell he wanted to even avoid the conversation and his wife is my cousin and we had a pretty long talk about the whole thing. COVID really fucked things up :(. The good news is though I have though references when I find something. I just don't know when shit will stabilize now that COVID TRUMP VIRUS is back to being a big bullshit problem and states would be doing their best if they shut the flying fuck up and down again...

>_>

And sounds like a bridge wasn't necessarily burned, so maybe he can act as a reference?

oh absolutely. That was always part of the conversation. We had talked a number of times since March and it was always (I'll get back to you about work) and then after a few later months, it was "Call me when you can." and he opened with "I have bad news." I guess he was hanging on for a few years now (he owns multiple businesses). The other business was hurting for some time and Covid hit both hard enough so he had to cut back hard on both and that mean absorbing my job :(

but yeah, the reference is there as soon as I find a viable new job. My area is not in good shape now but when we start up again, I'll be in a better position to figure shit out...

it's good that one has savings. that will keep things afloat for months until things pick back up again.
when they find a reliable treatment for covid or vaccine everything will pick back up to near normal.

Where did you work?

Im a trucker and I have seen small family businesses shut down left and right across the country, it makes me sad. The worse part is the jobs that do remain will be big corperate giants who will tell you to fuck off.

The past 4 months has seen a sudden shift in trucking where mega corps took over most of the volume in freight. Right now im sitting in a target distribution center for the past 15hours to unload 4 fkn pallets. They wont let me personally unload for safety and liability reasons, even with a waiver. They bascially told me to fuck off. Fourth of July is canceled for me. This sort of nonsense would never fly with the smaller family businesses

Damn. I sympathize.

I have people over there who might be interested in hiring a few guys for their remodels and roofing jobs. It's isn't glamorous, nor that well-paid (depending on your experience), but the work is there.

If you're interested I'll call them in the morning and ask if they have room for one more.

We may dislike each other, but no man deserves to be out of work. It fucks with their mind.

You'll power through, 10 year reference lost only due to pandemic (as opposed to bring a shitty employee) is a killer item on the resume.

I got laid off in April from my job of 15 years. My first job out of school. So I feel you. Between that and unemployment taking about 10 weeks to finally kick in this has been the most anxiety ridden period of my life and lost 15 pounds because I could hardly keep anything down, my nerves were so bad. I've casually looked, applied, and been turned down for a few jobs here and there, but honestly I'm not quite ready to step out into the world again just yet. Some small part of me is holding out hope I will be hired back when, and if, they reopen in the fall, but we'll see. Good luck to you!
