The people saying start a Muslim school think they are making a great point but they aren't at all. Muslim and Jewish schools would indeed fall under this ruling, otherwise it would be establishment of a religion and unconstitutional.

I don't think taxpayers should fund religious education, but this article and this topic are edgy atheist garbage. People who don't understand religion at all and have no interest in understanding religion talking about how bad religion is.

I personally have had great experiences with religious schools. But I have heard stories about bad religious schools. The simple solution is to pass laws banning the teaching of hateful things. This is pretty vague, but "comparing homosexuality to bestiality and incest", if that is even true, would clearly fall under that.

Edit: I think this ruling does that? According to the article, the ruling is, "Once a state funds private education, it cannot disqualify some private schools solely because they are religious." Despite what this article says, being religious does not mean you think homosexuality is like bestiality and incest. So a school teaching something like that would clearly be grounds for defunding.

The thing people are the most upset about isn't that we think the schools are going to teach hateful things. I mean they might, but that's not the issue being discussed. We're upset because PRIVATE schools are not supposed to be funded by our tax dollars. And even if that weren't the case, our government isn't supposed to cater/show favoritism to religious institutions. This is a bad thing, regardless of what any of those particular schools teach.

The government isn't supposed to show favoritism to a particular religion, according to the Constitution. Beyond that it's an argument about whether tax dollars funding religious schools is just or not. It's a pretty complicated question, and this article and the majority of this topic are clearly not where you want to want to be getting your information from.

But to answer your first question, that goes beyond the scope of this ruling. 29 states + DC + PR already give tax funding to private schools. I said earlier in this topic, that's what people should really be yelling about.

Private schools curb stomp public schools in virtually everything.

I think all schools should go to the private sector and let them compete for the tax funding rather than just automatically be given money no matter how poor the results.

The tax credits they were getting in some states seemed fair because private school parents also pay taxes used for public schools and public students, even though obviously private school children do not utilize public schools. The private schools should not be getting public aid.

Private religious schools have been getting money from tax payers before or subsidies or credits.

NYC has had this be a thing for a while and it isnt limited to catholic schools.

there was a whole big deal with Jewish schools that were taking tax payer money and not teaching the core curriculums to be able to take the money after investigations were done.

they were either forced to abide or they lost their funding.

Neither of those things are relevant to this case. The point is IF states do give tax credits for private schools, they can't discriminate against certain institutions just because they have religious affiliations.

I disagree with the ruling for several reasons, but saying this ends separation of church and state is kind of blowing it out of proportion.

I mean, most people posting in the topic didn't read past the topic title. Hence all the false claims of taxpayer dollars going to the schools rather than to families that send their kids to the schools.
It's definitely the wrong decision, but not for the reasons people are freaking out about.
