After nearly eight decades in the closet, 90-year-old Colorado resident Kenneth Felts came out in a big way when penning his autobiography in quarantine reminded him of the love he had with another man when he was young, according to The Denver Post.

Ive been in the closet all my life deep in the closet, behind rows and rows of clothing. Im way back there, Felts told the Post. Opening that door at the front, I had great trepidation as to what people would say. I was very concerned because I needed people and I couldnt stand the thought of losing them just because I decided to finally be who I really was.

Working on his autobiography in lockdown brought Feltss emotions back to Phillip, a man he loved in California in the 50s before he buried his identity and lived outwardly as a straight man. Felts shared with his daughter Rebecca Mayes, who came out as a lesbian 20 years ago and is now married to Tracie Mayes, that he regretted leaving Phillip and has since tried to find him to no avail.

Following his conversation with his daughter, Felts wrote emails to friends and also a Facebook post in which he explained that he always felt as though he had two identities Ken, who is straight, and Larry who is gay.

He then got really involved. He bought a rainbow flag, a rainbow hoodie, and began organizing for LGBTQ+ causes, according to the Post.

He just really seemed to take it and run with it, Feltss daughter-in-law Tracie Mayes said. He seems to be making up for lost time and really is owning it, which is fantastic.

Despite realizing he was gay as far back as age 12, Felts married a woman, and eventually, they were divorced. His daughter Rebecca Mayes is from his marriage.

Feltss family, friends, and community have been overwhelmingly supportive of his coming-out, he said.

Dont underestimate your friends and family. You might be surprised at how they react if you were to decide to come out, he said. Enjoy what youve got while youve got it because youve only got it once.

I'm glad he gets to now be open with who he is

I wonder how many people from his generation (or even ours) continue to feel like they have to hide their sexual orientations because they feel like they might be ostracized by those they care about (or worse)

My coworker's mom kicked him out when he turned 18 because he's gay, he was homeless for a while and even 5 years later she still can't accept it. He showed me a text she sent him the other day saying she knows he'll get a wife one day. His reply to her was hard to read, saying he'd change himself if he could and he was sorry and he can get a surrogate baby since she wants grandkids and he still loves her

And I'm like, just cut the cord already. She's had five years to come to her senses and is still a moron. I know you want to have a good relationship with her but it isn't going to happen, don't let her continue to hold you back, just let it go. You're family if you act like family.

Luckily my parents stuffed away their homophobia when they realized I might not be straight

I hope he eventually finds Phillip. I cannot imagine spending my whole life pretending to be someone I am not. Very sad indeed.

Nothing new at all, countless gay men make a go of straight sex/life just because of being able to fit in societally with a fam and kids. Even now, of course. I dont think 100% straight people really see what happens mostly since its generally something that goes on both behind closed and just inside someones mind.

I generally pin the 50s decade (as in, men in their 50s) as when a late bloomer decides to say fuck it and come out, at least in terms of having gay sex.
