On a 1 to 10 scale, Id put myself at a 4.

I only say that because I know enough to know what I dont know.

4 sounds right. I do tech support on Linux hosting, but outside the website-centric stuff there's little I'm required to know besides how to view logs, ps aux, and restart services.

probably a 2. i took basically a linux course in uni but i basically forgot all the CLI commands.
im comfortable in windows powershell and am a capable googler so i could handle being thrown into linux. but right now ive basically forgot everything
maybe being comfortable in a cli and good at google in and of itself puts me at a 4 or 5?

Rusty but decently functional for the basics thanks to macOS and Raspbian. I can at least get around, but I need to check man pages every so often; my brain keeps going back to DOS.

Like a 3. I got really into it briefly, a decade or so ago, and then I stopped caring cause I actually just like video games more.

I used Linux for a bit then realized that it was basically pulling teeth to do absolutely anything and that I did not give a shit about nerd cred so I quit using it

My career as a software developer is following a similar arc

Installation guide cannot be beat: https://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/bsdinstall.html

Skip the portsnap bits. Youll be using pkg: https://www.freebsdfoundation.org/freebsd/how-to-guides/installing-a-desktop-environment-on-freebsd/

You should read through this as needed. Perfect reference: https://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/

I am going to look for up to date video content. There was a course on YouTube, but its 5 years old.

I'm good with windows. If I needed to learn it for a job or something i'd learn what I need to get comfortable using it.

1.5

I have a Chromebook, and it runs off a Linux kernal. It's fun to pop in a terminal and mess about with some stuff. The most useful thing I've done with it was use ffmpeg to convert all my dad's music files from .wav to .mp3. that was an awesome job that took a whole day of research lol. I felt so proud when I actually did it.

I have a decent bit of experience with Bash but the GUI? Not so much. Some distributions are probably better than others but I find Raspbian to be a PITA, and the only other one I've used much is CentOS, which I literally just used to open up the terminal lol.
