Given the recent number of cases where TV shows pull episodes with blackface.

Curious what is CE's consensus on this matter.

It depends on the context.
If the portrayal would be the same regardless of the character's appearance, then I don't have a problem with it.
If the portrayal is a stereotypical caricature, then yeah, I'll pass.

I wouldn't inherintly say "I'm okay with blackface" since it makes for awkwardness and discomfort regardless of intent, but the comedy mocking the concept itself and recognizing how bad it is (like Tropic Thunder) is different than actually doing it without irony.

Seriously depends on what it is, and 99% of the time it is wrong. but things like RDJ in Tropic Thunder was perfect and I fully accept it.

Edit: I just remembered when I was in 5th grade I had to do a presentation on Jesse Jackson, and my mom recommended putting (brown) shoe polish on my face to dress up like him.. I realized then it was wrong lmao

Only one I can think of Ive actually seen I guess would be tropic Thunder? Does that count?

Thought that movie was hilarious. Id probably have to wait and see what the situation was before I said if I would hate it or wouldnt mind it.

I just think, and have always thought, it's not interesting or amusing and don't get the point.

I immediately get hit with "they're playing with fire" then I proceed to let it add context and judge it case by case, while keeping in mind my perspective could also be off.

It's weird that it gets such a visceral reaction no matter the context despite it not being particularly prevalent in the last 50 years. There have certainly been cases of it, but it's hardly widespread. I get why people want to be culturally sensitive with what was one of many horrid practices, but the act of painting one's skin is not inherently the same thing as painting one's skin with the intention of mockery. Should one lack care, it can end up looking the same, but that's just a failure of intent. This sort of falls into the idea that making fun of a real accent is somehow racist, or wearing another culture's clothing is somehow racist. Both of those could certainly in a certain context be used in a racist manner, but neither are inherently racist. The existence of a horrid pastime shouldn't forever dictate the cultural perception of something.
