I feel like Ive been seeing a lot more high end pc folks boasting about AMD Ryzen chips, but doesnt AMD have offen have compatibility problems of varying severity with some games? Am I stupid and wrong?

i wanna build a high end pc but dont know where to start lol

Right now the difference between Intel and AMD is so negligible it isn't worth the price difference. AMD has really knocked it out of the park with the chips they've come out with this time around and this is coming from a former Intel guy.

As far as gaming goes the compatibility problems you might bre reading about are with AMD's GPUs which is just another word for Graphics card. So I'd still personally go with NVIDIA RTX-series if you want a high-end PC.

We can get a better idea of what to suggest to you with a budget. You can build a high-end rig sans the monitor for about 2k depending on how beefy you want it.

intel cpus are better for gaming
amd cpus are better for everything else

and iirc intel barely wins at gaming while amd does productivity things a tad bit better than intel

amd cpus are also noticeably cheaper

i have a ryzen CPU. i love it. its fast, per price point. you can't buy a chip that runs this fast from intel at this price point. intel chips will be faster sure, but you're paying more for it. if you want the top top top of the line, go for intel. but if you want value? amd is the way.

which is what i would have said 3 years ago. nowadays, intel seems to have given up and amd just keeps knocking it out of the park with every single thing. they're faster, they're cheaper, they dont fuck you when it comes to chipset compatibility (they almost did, but they walked it back!). unless you're making server grade PCs, i dont see why you would get an intel.

GPU, their radeon cards are great i think. they're a little bit slower than the comparable nvidia cards, but like 100 dollars cheaper.

people say there are driver issues, but honestly, ive never ran into one. all my games run fine, no issues. i think people have driver issues because they swapped out their cards and didn't uninstall their nvidia drivers and then it doesn't work and really its their fault. but i went from nvidia to my radeon rx 5700xt and i run games in 1440p, 100+ fps on mostly high settings. no issues.

AMD CPUs will probably be better for PS5/XSX gen games for what that's worth

Intel still for now has best single core performance which helps older games but newer stuff would really benefit from multicore performance where AMD wins iirc

You can probably ride a 2080 ti into the next 5-10 so years no problem. When the 3000-series come out it should cause the 2000 stuff to be cheaper. You shouldn't see to much of a price hike between the 3000 and 4000 series of ryzen. Most speculations go from $100 for budget cpus to $750 for the unnecessary beefcake cpus.

The 2080 TI or super (whichever is more powerful, fuck if I can remember) is what I was looking at yeah, although the idea of a potential 40% power increase over THAT is tempting.

AMD processors are cheaper than Intel, are better for mulithreaded tasks, and have slightly worse single threaded processing power than Intel so it's an easy choice unless you're trying to build the highest of the high end PCs

If you're only gaming on your computer then you probably don't give a crap about multithreaded tasks. But I'm using mine for both gaming and work related crap on Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04 on separate SSDs.

A 2k budget could get you a Ryzen 9 3900x ($400), a 2070 ($550) or 2080 ($700), a good case ($150), a great motherboard ($200-300), a good modular PSU ($150), and plenty of solid state storage. Or you can cut some corners here and there if you want RGB vomit all over the inside of your case. Oh yeah forgot RAM, 32 GB 3600MHz was $160 for me

Either way you go I'd recommend waiting until prices settle from covid and by then we should know how much the 3000 series will be. I wouldn't expect a huge hike but if you get a 3080 ti you're good for a long-ass time.

4k is complete overkill for a PC monitor, unless you're going for some 40+ inch monster. get a 1440p 144hz monitor and if you're willing to pay the nvidia tax get one with gsync certification.

I have an RGB keyboard and mouse with rainbow effects, but my case setup is a mono black/white, and the keyboard and mouse are also black. If I find an excuse to get new RAM, I'd buy RGB ones and just let them glow white. Also misspoke about RAM, it was $130 not $160, $160 is if you bought the same brand, same speed, but with RGB

I'm sure it depends on the game and what other settings you've got. A far bigger problem is a 4k 144hz monitor is going to cost more than the rest of your parts combined.

It's not Heat issues.

It's being held back by Apple deals now.

https://www.anandtech.com/show/15853/amd-announces-radeon-pro-5600m-mobile-gpu-with-hbm2-memory

Look at that Mobile GPU, that would wipe the floor with Nvidia's higher end Mobile GPU's if they tuned it up.

But sadly, Apple has a exclusive part for who knows how long.
