Not completely true. 3 years is the normal statute of limitations. For minor errors, they can only go back to audit and collect on the last 3 years. If they have reason to believe there is a significant omission, they can go back 6 years. But for downright fraudulent returns, there is no statute of limitations.

So depending on the level of lie, there is no time limit.
