i really dont understand this counseling stuff. We want counselors for the most likely to be volatile and unpredictable situations? Domestics and mentally ill? You guys realize having a couple willingly come to therapy is not the same when you respond to a house and a see lady with broken teeth because her drunk husband is beating her to a pulp. The counselor going to walk and do what exactly? Who is going to arrest the guy. I can go on about this with suicidal people and etc.. these situations are inherently dangerous. So you want a social worker police force without weapons or arresting powers essentially

FD and medical will not respond to a medical only call if theres any sense thats its dangerous, even the slightest info the guy is mentally ill. They will not go until we place the person in custody or diffuse the situation

Either they have a very limited view of police duties as only about "stopping violent crime" or they're fully aware of other duties and want to get rid of the people that ticket them for jaywalking or speeding, give out DUIs, and enforce those laws about weed they don't want to follow.

The criminals commit crimes... but its the cops fault... for arresting them.... and sending them to jail.... for the crimes they commit. Hmm, so no accountability at all i see. But the state should give poor people money and then they wont commit crime because their needs are met? What needs would that be - housing, college, healthcare, childcare, food, guaranteed employment? Enforced 'equality'. Sounds familiar, comrade.

Why are they blaming cops for immigration laws and the war on drugs instead of the fuckin politicians who made the laws? Lol thats stupid.

insane lol. My area recently took a really bad part of town from another station. My area used to be considered the nicest and easiest for cops during the morning. Now I spent my whole shift running call to call in the bad area. Literally all our calls are over there. From citizen created violent calls. It is really non stop violent domestics, shootings, robberies, and burglaries. I am not there willingly to disrupt their community. Theyre committing crimes and people are calling it in lol

More like other duties could be handled better by people actually trained for them and with methods that uplift the community rather than pump cash into the govt piggybank.

Yes I have. A lot of it sounds like somebody that went on Reddit and believes the common tropes said about cops. I dont think he was a cop at all tbqh. He did bring up some good points.

bottom line is this. Yes there are police reforms are that are needed. But having social workers respond to inherently dangerous calls is just going to get everybody murdered or hurt. Second, there are other functions of policing besides patrol work. And lastly, all of these articles and books al believe in this, everyone will police themselves motto. I can tell you first hand majority of my job is spent being a mediator because people have no idea how to police themselves without violence or anger.

The optimistic prediction is that it would save a lot of money, but the likely outcome is it will just end up in the pockets of some other person(s). On the emergency response side, I like the idea of sending more mental health or medical professionals out to handle incidents. I dont know whom we would send to handle violent people, because there really are people demanding that the police be disbanded.

It needs reform so the corruption in the force can end. Getting rid of it entirely is just tantamount to legalizing murder

this is based on several assumptions, including:
1. the police are effective at preventing murder, either as a deterrent or by direct intervention
2. the police are effective at solving murders
3. corruption in the system, rather than the system itself, is the problem
4. reforming the system would end corruption and/or the actual problems
5. the reforms themselves will be permanent fixtures of the system, rather than policies that can be undone, ignored, or otherwise undermined

of these assumptions, 3 and 5 are outright false.

I have read many convincing arguments against 4 and none in favour of it, so it's going in the "tenuous" pile

the data on solved murders suggests that 2 is false as well. there is some semantic ambiguity in what counts as "effective" though, so I'll be generous and call it "tenuous" as well

the reduction in crime rates in Camden is, admittedly, not much to go on, but it does suggest that 1 is false as well.

so 2 assumptions of 5 are false, and the other 3 are tenuous.

you should probably do some re-examining of where these assumptions are coming from -- I can recommend some books/essays/articles to help you along if you like
