Neighbors have a 5 year old with pretty severe autism and man it's tough. Raising a child without autism is tough as hell I can't even imagine what it's like for them. My nephew has a very mild form and he's a handful. It's just so hard to communicate.

Friend of mine has 2 autistic kids. One is 4, the other is 5. Luckily they aren't severe cases though. They are both pretty non-verbal. The girl will try to interact with people, even strangers but has problems saying what she wants to say. The boy (youngest) is the same way but highly active and if left alone for 30 seconds he will destroy something.

Couldn't imagine how difficult it would be to raise a severely autistic child. My 4 year old is really well behaved in comparison to many other similar aged kids I see but even she can be a nightmare at times.

I don't know if i'd be able to deal with that. It's my biggest fear with having children. I feel like my life would be truly over because if it's a severe case you get very, VERY rare moments of peace and/or joy, it's mostly just dealing with endless chaos for no reward.

I've heard that if you add depression to ASD you got almost a lobotomy or just really hollow frontal lobes. I hope the parents are good people.

It's one if the main reasons I never want kids. If I found out my wife was pregnant and the kid had down syndrome, i would demand she get an abortion, and if she refused thatd be grounds for divorce. But autism is scarier because theres no way of knowing before the kid is born.

it sounds like kind of a terrible thing to say but it's one of the reasons i'd rather adopt than make a new baby

My cousin's half brother is autistic. I don't know how to properly judge what is severe and what's not, but he's 14-15 and can communicate ok, but it's like talking to a small child. He has trouble walking, has to have help going to the bathroom, and will wail and scream sometimes and also will have his fits every now and again. He got very, very upset when his dad got a new set of chairs and a table and we were moving the old ones out.

He pretty much has to be constantly looked after and it's tough since his dad is in his early 60's and his mom is a drug and alcohol abuser and is pretty much gone from his life. It's a shame because he's a good kid overall.

Not demand as in physically force her to. But give her an ultimatum if she refused to do it. Either get it done or were getting a divorce. I'd pay child support but I wouldn't have to ruin my life dealing with the kid for the next several decades.
