My friend was helping me train. I havent done pull-ups since I was a kid.

I clearly need to build up my upper body strength

I'm so weak I could never do them even as a kid. My upper body strength is severely lacking.

Just keep at it.

I went from being able to do 3 straight wide set pull ups to 20 in a couple months.

And then down to 10 after quitting doing them every other day. >.>;

They get easier pretty quickly. Like the journey from 3 to 10 is surprisingly quick.

I don't understand why under arm pull-ups are so much easier, I get being a little bit easier but I can more than quadruple the amount of pull-ups I can normally

Recommend doing chin ups until you're able to crank out a full pull up. aka, palms facing you, kinda curl as you go. Much easier for a novice than palms away and relying far more on your lats.

And in the meantime do other back/arm things like rows or something and you'll get better at em :D

Just keep at it. Even a robust fellow like myself can do multiple sets of 10.

My friend who was coaching me told me to go as high as I could on the pull-up bar and hold it for 3 seconds. Did 4 sets of that. My arms are jelly now

Just go down the line and start at the bottom until you can do normal pushups and pullups like deadhangs or a pushup with your knees touching the ground too to get upper arm strength
