I liked games like Darkwatch, Halo and the Turok series.

Definitely a product of their times but we wouldn't have the battle royal shooters or online multiplayer FPSs without them.

I like both styles, but I do prefer the more open-ended style. My favorite one is basically a mixture of the two though (Deus Ex). System Shock 2 is another great example. I still have to play Prey (2017), which I bought recently.

I think we definitely would have had these genres, regardless.

I absolutely love Half-Life, some of my favorite games, but I agree the design philosphy is very limited and the gameplay is limited to the individual encounters rather than the experience as a whole.

A few days ago I wrote a good length post on reddit about how the modding community for Half-Life, instead of just making random campaigns, should start making branching paths to the campaigns we have. It was largely ignored:
