Classic Doom, Shadow Warrior, Duke 3D etc were great and we don't really much like them anymore

I liked games like Darkwatch, Halo and the Turok series.
Definitely a product of their times but we wouldn't have the battle royal shooters or online multiplayer FPSs without them. --- "He busted in, blessed be the Lord Who believe any mess they read up on a message board" -MF DOOM ... Copied to Clipboard!

I like both styles, but I do prefer the more open-ended style. My favorite one is basically a mixture of the two though (Deus Ex). System Shock 2 is another great example. I still have to play Prey (2017), which I bought recently.

Definitely a product of their times but we wouldn't have the battle royal shooters or online multiplayer FPSs without them. I think we definitely would have had these genres, regardless. I absolutely love Half-Life, some of my favorite games, but I agree the design philosphy is very limited and the gameplay is limited to the individual encounters rather than the experience as a whole. A few days ago I wrote a good length post on reddit about how the modding community for Half-Life, instead of just making random campaigns, should start making branching paths to the campaigns we have. It was largely ignored: https://www.reddit.com/r/HalfLife/comments/gvlr50/a_halflife_game_structured_like_the_stanley/ ... Copied to Clipboard!
