I dont usually have that much money and I was down to like 800 bucks yesterday. And last night I happened to be checking my account online and someone made 2 massive ebay purchases on PayPal somehow. Wiped out my savings. Almost 300 dollars in the red now. It shocked me big time when I saw that negative balance

Anyway I got the card canceled. And might be getting my money back but this really sucks and is a huge pain in the ass

Get a savings account, and transfer everything but intentionally-liquid funds out of your checking.
Make sure your bank just flat denies overdrafts, instead of sucking it out of other accounts.

Don't worry you just have to deal with not having that money until this gets resolved.

Recommend you get a credit card through your bank. Pay off the balance every month. If there are ever fraudulent charges on the CC there is no actual money removed from your account so it's significantly easier to deal with than debit fraud.

If they made the purchase through PayPal, then the problem isn't with your debit card, it's with your PayPal account. Cancelling your card without changing your PayPal info won't fix anything. (also there's probably fraud protection to get your money back)

I think PayPal might also have a 2 factor authentification to allow payments to go through (but I might be wrong on that one..)

Not really, but there's a delay between "fraud" and "broke".

I know. I always told myself if I ever do get a credit card I will have to be really careful with it. My sister had problems with credit card debt and I don't want to do that myself.

The first mistake is even having credit card debt for longer than 30 days or so at a time.

This. You'll have to wait a couple months, maybe a year, to get your money back.

Good thing you had the card cancelled before they made that last purchase. But yeah locking your PayPal account is a good idea for the time being.

it looks like the person was buying some kind of computer parts. the last purchase attempt triggered an email saying basically "hey you bid or whatever on this such and such thing, but there was an issue with payment...." and I saw that it was some kind of computer hardware.

This, because someone went on a shopping spree last year and drained our down payment for a house in three hours.

Got it all back and have been paying with credit on everything possible ever since.

the bank teller suggested I make a police report. I wonder if I can get this person arrested

Probably, it's fraud and identity theft.

I hope they were dumb enough to have it shipped to their own house. The idiots that stole my grandparents info did, and we got her ass convicted, sent to prison. She had done it to others too, which is why she got so much time.
