Like the Wii U and Wii did, to improve the functionality of the motion sensing controls.

Of course it improved the functionality. That was the whole point of the sensor bar for the Wii and Wii U.

The switch uses gyro not movement sensing hence why the wiimote barely worked without the bar.

The sensor bar was 2 IR lights that the camera in the Wiimote could see. The joy-cons (and some later Wii games like Skyward Sword) don't use a camera for pointing, they use gyro sensors.

The sensor bar isnt really about motion thats handled by gyroscopic sensors. The sensor bar provides LED reference points which allow a Wiimote to track its position and angle relative to the TV (using the sensor bar as a proxy). The Wiimote interprets this information through its IR sensor and then communicates all position / motion / user input to the console via Bluetooth. To illustrate: the sensor bar is what allows the Wiimote to function like a lightgun (or at least provide a convincing illusion; the technology is completely different).
