If you're talking about people with their trophy dogs they dump when they get bored, yes. Though that's a problem for most kinds of pets people buy on an impulse.

It's family and I'd be willing to save a family member. I spent 2.5k to save my dog. Many would have put him to sleep.

It's really not that complicated, you can't just pick a random mammal of similar intelligence and be able to train it to warn you about danger, pick up trail scents, herd flocks, etc.

For the vast majority of dog owners, it's just companionship.

The only real difference is that dogs are openly available, while other animals aren't.

Sure, but that dog is now valuable as a tool for your listed applications, yet it has no greater access to sentience than other animals. It is not unique in being able to build companionship and experiencing suffering, which is what >90% of dog owners actually care about in the US. Ask your average dog owner and odds are all they've trained them to do is a few tricks and to not shit inside. Additionally, there should be nothing wrong with considering them a source of meat by other cultures as their capacity for thought and emotion is not meaningfully different from slaughterhouse animals.

Yes, that is why. But that does not mean it is rational for the modern day pet owner to be horrified at the idea of a slaughter dog as these things are meaningless to modern pet owners.
