Even if I hadn't had the plot spoiled for me on multiple occasions, the way Steinbeck makes it clear the writing is on the wall is really good. That ominous sense that something dreadful is going to happen...but you don't know what. I also laughed at the way that when Lennie kills Curly's wife, all he cares about is how he won't be able to have rabbits in the future.

Not too bad a book. Too short, definitely, and the dialects are sometimes annoying (but probably accurate), but decent enough.

Thoughts on it?

The dialects are spot on. My Grandfather grew up in that era and area and both he and his family still had a smidgeon of that dialect despite having lived in Missouri for the last 40 years. Lengthwise I think it was perfect. It's a tragedy, so it sticks around just long enough to set the stage, let you get to know the players, then let the tragedy play out. Sticking around longer would just seem odd.
This guys summary of it is amazing. Really all of that dude's work is great.

Same here. It's a book I remember enjoying while in high school.

....Can't say the same for The Old Man and the Sea, which was just way too boring from what I vaguely remember.

I remember being a little haunted by the ending. Just seemed like a tragic chain of events for a poor man who didn't know better.

I also liked A Separate Peace, All Quiet on the Western Front and The Great Train Robbery.

Yes, my European History teacher assigned us a Michael Crichton novel. Because even though I sucked at his class, dude was awesome and knew what was up.

He actually got an award one the year before had his class for being the world's best European History teacher, based on some criteria involving AP tests. Some combination of the portion of his class that took it and the grades they got.

Man I would totally hang out with that guy these days.

Having a great teacher really makes a difference. Even if you struggle in a class, the right teacher makes you want to be a part of that class.

Another book I remember is Lord of the Flies. That one I didn't fully "get" back then, but as I got older it became more clear to me.

Holy fuck did I hate A Separate Peace. The only assigned reading I had absolutely did not like. Even as an adult I've tried it and still hate it.

We read Of Mice and Men during my junior year and I wept in class at the ending. I sat in the back and had a reputation for napping in class so I put my head down and dont think anyone noticed.

Its been one of my favorite books since and Ive had a tendency to seek out and enjoy sad stories that continues to today

For some reason The Pearl was the only Steinbeck work I had to read for high school. Didn't end up reading Of Mice and Men until much later.

I like Grapes of Wrath better as far as Steinbeck goes.

I didn't know the ending beforehand, but I was taken aback by their relationship, because I had seen the "okay George" gag in several Looney Tunes. I never knew those characters were on homage of that, or anything for that matter.

It makes the one where the dog thinks he squeezes Bugs to death so much darker when it's referencing the murder from the book.

Yeah Looney Tunes had a bunch of references that slip by until you're older.

Or at least I would hope a little kid didn't read the scene about the rabbits...
